I am doing up an old bike and have removed the cassette as it needs replacing.
Its unbranded so don't know whether its shimano, campy sram etc...
how do i find out? Are the splines different from hub shell to hub shell?

Yes they are. Depending on how old the freewheel is. Working backwards from today; Campags key spline has a dogtoothed step in it. Shimano/SRAM key spline is smaller than all the rest (HG). 1989 Shimano cassettes have uni uniglide ie 9 equal spline but twisted teeth to enable shifting. Lots more info hereNeil
