I can't push big gears anymore so I want to fit a 48/36 double chainset to my road bike to go with the 14-25 cassette. These are about as rare as rocking horse pooh. Would there be any problem in buying a 48/36/26 triple and just removing the inner ring? Thanks
I'm not getting old... I'm just using lower gears......

It might be possible but the Q line might be wrong, far better getting a compact and changing the chainrings over.

The chainline would be far from ideal.

Buy any chainset/cranks with a BCD of 110mm and fit the appropriate rings or just leave the inner ring where it is since it weighs v.little. You would need a longer bb.

In an ideal world you'd fit a BB that had a 7mm shorter axle as middle/outer on a triple sit about 3mm further out than the rings on a double (ie the centre of the cassette lining up with middle chainring, rather than the half-way point between inner & outer on a double). In the real world it's unlikely to be necessary.
  • Many thanks for all the replies.
