dudes, trawling the forums for a method of bleeding my XT disc brakes, I found this.
I've hard stuff about the '09 servo wave being a pig to bleed, but this sounds real easy....what's the verdict?

1. Get a syringe and pop a tube/hose on the end. Fill it with the oil
2. Take the top cap off the lever, and put something under it to catch the oil
3. Attach the syringe to the bleed nipple, loosen the nipple and pump the whole syringe through until your happy that you’ve flushed all the old oil out of the system – take care not to push too hard or it’ll send a fountain of oil out the top of the lever – but it is amusing!!!!
4. Once you’re happy you’ve got all the old oil out, close everything back off (bleed nipple etc). Then get a ziptie and tie the lever to the bar, do it as tight as is possible, this will allow any air bubbles left over to rise to the lever. For best results, adjust the lever reach so it’s all the way out, and also leave the top cap off the lever.
5. It’s best to leave it doing this overnight, to give it time to get rid of all the air bubbles, but a couple of hours will do if you haven’t got time. Make sure you have the calliper lower than the lever, it might help to remove the calliper for this bit, and also make sure that there are no loops in the hose.
6. When you come back to it, you might need to refill the lever with oil, then all you do is reassemble everything and ride away!

Also, I've got about a gallon of mineral oil for a citroen, this stuff going t be OK???

Cheers all.

sounds like shimanos way for bleeding.

and yes LHM is mineral oil.

does this method not mean you get mineral oil all over the lever and handlebars? could be a pain to clean up?

Motorcycle manufacturers use a similar method ie. they pump the fluid in at the bleed nipple. I tried it using a syringe once, but I think the syringe seals reacted with the fluid as it kept sticking and things got messy. It might be easier with Shimano's mineral oil though.

Just use 2 syringes, extract old oil from the reservoir at the lever before injecting new fluid in at the bleed nipple.

LHM is good because its green, ie you can see when you`ve got rid of the pink shimano oil.

This is the best method i`ve found for Shimano.

Thie 'syringe backwards' system of bleeding brakes is long established on motocross, bikes, where brake hoses go through 2 up and down loops(over the number plate, and under the fork leg), and are otherwise impossible to bleed. It is brilliant and works on all brakes, as it pushes the liquid through fast enough to push out any air bubbles caught in the loops. I put a plasic tub under the master cylinder to catch any spilling brake fluid, then clean up the master cylinder afterwards. Once tried you will continue with this sytem. remeber to remove the brake pads, and put in a spacer to hold the pistons apart, before you bleed the brakes. a 100 mm Allen key is what I use as a spacer on my hope brakes.

    Cheers

    Might be worth adding...

Cover the top reservoir with a CLEAN rag (or similar), if you're going to leave the top off for any length of time, to stop any crud dropping in and contaminating the system.

This is a real beginners question - thanks for the tips so far BTW.
What size spanner do I need for the bleed nipple? 6mm?
