after reading lots of reviews of people who had bought the boardman team carbon, and the spokes had broken on the wheels, i was put off buying one, but now they have a LTD edition one out, i am considering getting one, but i am not sure if the wheels have been sorted out? does anybody know if they would have/ have sorted the wheels out now?
cheers Jamie

  • I bought a Boardman Team Carbon on Cycle2work, I live in Leeds but I bought my bike from the White City branch of Halfords in Manchester as I got a better response than the store in Leeds. I too was concerned about some of the posts here, but rest assured my bike has been marvellous. They even called

I think a change was made to the way the Boardman bikes are handled now, I think Boardman set them up and send them through to Halfords, the tunr the handlebars round and add the seatpost and then just give them a check over before sending them out. However at the WHite City store the guy who brought my bike out noticed the excess on the brake cable was about 4 inches, so he went and got some pliers and a new nipple and shortened the cable so it would catch on anything. A pretty good level of attention to detail I thought. I have checked all the spokes on the wheels and they all are sorted.

I can recommend the Boardman Team Carbon, it's a lovely bike, the spokes haven't been a problem for me at all.

  • I was all setto hand overly C2W voucher for the standard Team Carbon, which is sat waiting for me at my local Halfords, but seeing this I'll wait until December for it if I manage to reserve one before they all go. Looks very, very nice IMO.

I doubt it very much if they have changed the wheels or the manufacturing process even, just look like the same thing but with different colour scheme. Why would they change the wheels just because a handful of riders have experienced spoke trouble?

Level of service will differ in Halfords branches, but on the whole, half decent bike but shame about the way they're sold.
  • Got my ltd edition 'pre-ordered' and Halfords are going to hold the standard one should there be any problems once the ltd is released and I don't get one for whatever reason.
As to your original question regarding the wheels, which I failed to answer, when I was doing my research I spoke to one of the cytech trained mechanics at halfords who was well aware of the problem and he said that it had been sorted but they were still checking all the spokes on these bikes just to make sure. Maybe I'm lucky and have got decent mechs at my local branch who know exectly what they are talking about.

Or they just came up with a plausible story - I can't see then changing supply chain / wheels or making chnages to the production of the wheels - it has been a handful of riders who have experienced issues.

and anyway - I can pretty much guarantee that half of you buying these bikes will be back on here in 6 months time with a "what part to upgrade" thread - the result of which will be a new set of wheels! - std fit wheels, IME, are never any good - even on bikes which are often well about the grand mark.

From what I understand (not much really!) it wasn't the wheels that were at fault, but the build of them that caused the spoke nipples to work loose (ie. they hadn't been tightened enough) so it's unlikely they're going to want to change a reasonable entry level wheel if there is not an actual problem with them, as such.

^ You're right, some will be back in a few months looking to upgrade, and I'll be one of them, starting with the brakes and then the wheels when money allows.

Apart from the colour scheme, is there any difference to the Ltd edition?
