is this the oldest average aged team ever for its main 'big guns' ?

  • Must be, but the 3 of them had a solid 2009 and that's what we should be looking at.

Looking for other squadre dei grandi vecchi, maybe we could mention Gerolsteiner in 2005:

    Rebellin 34
    Leipheimer 33
    Totschnig 34

Or Brianzoli in 1986: Moser (35), Thurau (33), Baronchelli (33). Moser gave Baronchelli such a hard time that the latter left for another team mid-season -and still managed to win the Lombardia.

And then maybe old fogeys round here will remember Gan-Mercier in 1976: team stars were called Poulidor (40), Hoban (36) and Zoetemelk (30). Poulidor actually made the Tour podium (3rd), but those were other times...

is that the oldest podium tour finisher ?
  • Yeah, I think Poulidor must be the oldest podium Tour finisher since 1945. Not so sure about the ancient, heroic times though. Like, did you know the Tour's oldest winner ever is Belgium's Firmin Lambot in 1922? Lambot was almost 37.

    Might be Zoetemelk...
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.
