I heard on singletrack forum that Afan argoed will be having an uplift service next year. Some people think this is why The Drop Off cafe is closing but I think thats complete faf. So anybody heard anything about this uplift business?

there was an interview with the guy who runs the cwmdown uplift at cwmcarn in dirt this month and it sounded as if he was planning on expanding so it could be him....0

The Drop Off isn't closing...the bike shop guys put in a better tender so an eatery of some sorts will remain.
And does Afan really need an uplift? Not exactly a difficult or long climb whichever route you take. Unless you are are very unfit and getting fitter isn't on the agenda.Whyte 905 (2009)

:? Soon nonoe will ride uphill at all.I think half the fun of riding is the satisfaction of getting to the top so you can enjoy the down. fan certainly doesn't need an uplift, they should be confined to downhill courses only0

I do agree to a certain extent, the grualing uphill makes the downhill stuff even more enjoyable but if you could spend a day of not having to climb you could do a lot more of the dh sections which are the best bits. As for fitness, the DH sections are just as hard on your body as the uphill if your riding them properlly (the legs can burn like hell after 5 mins or so of propper riding on the DH sections.)0 -
agree you need the uphill to really enjoy the down hill. Yes it is tiring and sometimes you hate the thought of climbing but with out it would be half the fun!!
not sure downhill is as hard on your body as uphill - if there wasn't any uphill there would be quite a few "larger" downhillers but that may mean you would get down quicker.....0 -
I agree downhill is very hard on your body, have done a couple of uplift days at downhill tracks. Uplifts encourage people to use big heavy DH rigs that are not suitable for xc trails and cause excessive wear to trails and spoil it for xc riders that is why they should only uplift at DH courses.0

I definitely feel that by climbing to the top you earn and enjoy the downhill even more. But, how about a cafe at the top. Do the climb, sit down relax with tea and cake and then blast the downhill.0
