Penine Bridleway

Me and a few mates from work are thinking of doing the Penine Bridleway sometime next year.

Has anyone else done the full length thats currently open, 120 odd miles of it? How long would you say it takes, bearing in mind we're all from Norfolk and well we dont get too many hills round here ;)

Also would you say any particular bike can ride it or does the terrain get a little too tough for say a hybrid/road bike (2 of the guys only have hybrids at this time).

Cheers

I think you may have a bit of a shock. We have big hills around here. I'm sure you could ride it on hybrid but it will be hard and you'll probably end up walking some bits. Some of the surfacing is fine, other sections are more rutted and or rocky. Not sure how long the 120 miles would take but I've managed the Mary Townley Loop in 7 hrs and that's 47 miles, wouldn't want to get back on and ride for second day after that mind.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result

Some parts are nice and smooth but there are some absolute swinish sections that are surfaced with big cobbles that try and bounce your eyeballs out of there sockets. You will need a good tough bike to be able to do any speed. A guy I know did all the section that was open a year ago (more bits have been added around Burnley) on a hardtail bike last year and he freely admits that it nearly killed him. After about 20 miles he would have sold his granny for some rear suspension.

Give it a go the scenery is fantastic (click link in my sig thats just off the Pennine Bridleway) and your never too far away from a town if you need to bail out and catch a train home.

Well spotted stumpy its at the top of the short climb out of Rodmer Clough.

First time we ever rode that route it was weeing down and there was epic vampire movie type lightning crashing down all round us. There was a river flowing down the track and it was a case of keep on pedalling or drown

Utter madness to ride over the top in that weather but it is one ride we always talk about.

Cheers guys just as I thought, I've done a few rides around the country (wales/white peak) myself but just wanted to get some mates into it to have some more MTB riding buddies and thought it'd be a fun challenge for a few days but wasnt too sure on the actual surface types of the bridleway. :D

Ah, the sunset over Turf Moor, the smell of burning tyres from Branch Road mingled with kebabs from Papa Sams, the clink of fracturing crack pipes up Accrington Road and the crunch of used syringes under your tyres. All washed down with Haffner's pie and a steaming glass of Benny and Hot from the Miners.

    Come to Burnley. It's sh...

Woah, now hold it right there effendi! You can't say that! That's cos it's racialist innit, bro?

Admittedly that thing near Asda is an absolute abortion isn't it? Looks like a tit. Apparently they've run out of money to finish it now, it's not moved since they put the dome on it. At least the one in Nelson kind of blends in but I can see that thing from my house in Cliviger!
