Shimano XT shifters compatible with Tiagra derailleur?

Hey,
building a flat barred road bike, and Im in the market for 9sp shifters. just wondering if anyone knows if the shimano m770 9sp XT shifters work with a Tiagra derailleur?

    (although if you run a double/compact c/set then you can get a mtb shifter to work okay with a road FD)
