Have a read of the What Bike sticky, and the beginners forum.
  • What about a Carrara Vengeance, .Take no notice of the RRP, that's just an illusion.... Use code AFFREG10 to get 10% off making it £269.99 plus delivery or pick up in store.

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165499

Maybe some of the experts here will give an opinion on it's value for money.

i have seen the Scott Voltage YZ 35 2010 and Mongoose Fireball 26 2009 what do you think of these bikes. Thanks for the replies
  • I think you can use that code I posted on a Carrera kraken bring it in at about £340 it has better components than the Carrera Vengeance.

The Kraken is half a kilo lighter…
    27spd, not 24…
    Front mesh X5’s not X3’s
    Rear mesh X5 not X4
    Gear shifters X5 not X4
    Better double wall rims
    Better chain.
and more adjustable fork with a lockout.

If you have a decathlon store near you then this could be worth checking out:

    http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/rockrider-5-3-34963817/

I was advised (on this forum) to try the Rockrider 8.1 (the 5.3's big brother), have duly done so and am going to buy it next weekend.

The 8.1 is very well spec'ed for the money. I'm not sure how the 5.3 compares but it could be worth you checking out? I'm not saying buy it but no harm in comparing to others you are looking at and taking for a test ride.

Hmmm, just realised the £300 model has mechanical disks which I've read on this forum can be problematic? Other users may know better here?

If you can afford an extra £70 then this has hydraulic brakes:

Again, worth comparing to your other models?

I have the Rockrider 5xc - a brilliant bike for the price - better value than the halfords (better forks and brakes). The juicy 3's are very good brakes, and the fork is really good to, despite being made by suntour and the gears and frame are great for the price to, and so is the rest of the finishing kit. Definetly worth the extra £70 over the 5.3.

That's more like it buddy, have a look at the carrera fury for that price (or just a touch over), very nice bike indeed.

There's also this gt agressor xc2, very similar bike spec wise (brakes and forks aren't as good) and £80 cheaper, though the geometry on those frames has always looked a little weird to me...

The kraken is a nice bike too for just under £400

You could also get yourself a decent used bike for £500, though i wouldn't reccommend it unless you are a competent bike mechanic.

Sorry to Hijack a thread but didn't want to fill the forum up with lots of threads the same.

A shop near where I work has some good discounts on claud butler mtb's. How would these compare to the bikes mentioned above.

    Cluade butler pinewood 2009 - £399 (rrp £750)
    Cluade butler cape wrath d24 - £329
    Cluade butler cape wrath d27 - £410

Want to make sure I get the best bike possible for sub £400. :D
  • The pinewood looks like a good deal at that price. it has Rock Shox Tora 302 U-turn forks that are worth at least £150 quid on there own. Avid Juicy 3 Hydraulic Disc Brake System and SHRAM x7 gears, the bike only has 18 gears but that's not a problem if the ratios are right....I've not even used the granny ring on my Kraken yet and I live in a hilly area.

The D27 has a good review here on Bikrader

That's a very good deal for the price. I've got this bike and I've found it very good.

Check out the BR review (for the 07 model admittedly) here.

    Errr its MECH, not mesh!
the vulcan is better though, but if you cant afford it the venance looks like fantastic value, esp with 10% off!

    Errr, it's Vengeance not venance!.

Would you care to elaborate why you think the Vulcan is better?
The vengeance is a Kilo lighter than the Vulcan and has hydraulic Discs where as the vulcan only has mechanical disc.

errr, i spelt it wrong, you used the wrong term, in a car it may be a mesh, but.... anyway, dont worry about that. as for the bikes, i thought the Vengeance was the cheaper of the two, the basic one, and the vulcan was the more expensive better speced one, obviously im wrong, i may have to check that again. so i was wrong, im sorry.

You've hit the nail on the head ..

A bike costing 300 will last as long and do the same job a bike costing 3 times as much .

It's only ownership neglect and inexperience that fails the bike
