Bottom bracket/pedal/crank noise. But which?

It's a clicking/knocking noise when I pedal. Sometimes one per complete revolution, sometimes one per half revolution, and only when I'm mashing, or going uphill. How do I figure out if it's a pedal, if my crank arm just needs tightening up (how do I do that by the way?), or if it's my bottom bracket?

I r stoopid.

EDIT: It's a halfords special carrera subway. Sealed bottom bracket I think.

It could be seatpost - does it stop if you're pedalling out of the saddle?
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Good question. I will check that out.

It does it standing up. It's rhythmic with the pedals, so I'm pretty sure it's crank/bottom bracket/pedal bearings.

Any idea how to diagnose which?

How do I tighten up a crank arm?

    Process of elimination.

Park Tools has a guide on bike noises.
