Bike Stolen, thieves disturbed - advice?

My giant XTC 4 (new but not particularly top of the range) was nicked last night, taken over next door, but the culprits were disturbed by the neighbour, and subsequently my bike has been found.

while I wait for scenes of crime to fingerprint (they've adjusted the saddle height), I won't hold my breath, and I'm f**ked off because the frame is scratched where they've cut through the chain lock, also damaging the coppi road bike it was attached to.

So my question is, does anyone rate anti vandal paint (to stop little toe rags) or have any other suggestions (other than dismantling the bikes and keeping them indoors, which is currently looking likely)

what a great society we live in!
They laughed when I said I was going to be a comedian. Well, they're not laughing now.

I agree totally with what was said above.

Of course you can become totally fixated with the problem but two things that I ensure are done are:

    - don't leave your power tools lying around for the little sods to use or steal
    - if you can, cut the power supply off to the garage.

i know how it feels, have had a bike stolen last year - could have murdered the bugger if i caught him.

I have a small shed now with an alarm, one of those battery powered ones with 4 buttons on it. It wont take a thief long to work out where it is, and destroy it but hopefully by that stage im awake. Although if it happens during hte day when im at work i hope my neighbours will intervene like yours did.

  • I got a rape alarm free from my local police after a spate of shed break ins. Fixed to the shed frame and looped onto a hook on the door it would scare the sh*t out of any unsuspecting thief when they prise the door open. Can also be fitted inside when items are moved.
  • well, the police have dusted it down, maybe they have some prints, but again, won't hold my breath.

two motorcycle locks purchased, and I've taken the front wheels off, and brought the frame inside.

I like the idea of an alarm, I'm thinking of relocating the bikes (they are currently on the lower level of a split level garden) and bringing them into their own storage area.

having checked the bike after dusting, they've really scratched the frame up badly. little ars*s

how about linking your house alarm to your shed

The sound of a car door opening in front of you is similar to the sound of a gun being cocked.
  • Top tip.. try a baby alarm if your bike's in a garage.
Easy to plug in and leave (as long as you have power in the shed/garage), the receiver can then be put next to your bed, or in your living room etc.
Anyone breaks in and you get a clear audible warning, a running commentary almost.
Obviously you have to be home and also have to decide whether you ring the police, let them know you're awake/aware, or go and confront them.

I have a pir floodlight which also sends a signal to a little bell-box receiver, it's how we caught the boy in our garden the other night. Alarms in the daytime too.
Not sure whether they're still available but recommended.
