Disc brakes

Can somebody give me some views on these brakes? I'm building a hardtail up for my dad and want to use as good components as I can get, but buying them used to save a bit... He's quite a bit heavier than me so I was thinking he'd want at least 180mm rotors... Having said that, the bike will only be used for XC and road...

So, I found some Hayes Stroker Rydes, some Hayes Stroker Carbon, and some Hayes HFX's... From what I can gather all of these are good, but what are the main differences between them, and, more importantnly, will a relatively casual user notice the differences? Which ones are most reliable? I'm kind of leaning towards the rydes at the moment since the seller has 203mm rotors with them whereas the carbons come with 160's...

My girlfriend has got Hayes Nines on the front, which I must say I personally think are fantastic, but my giant MPH brakes feel more progressive (the nines seem to be a lot more grabby...)

Unfortunately going for a ride with the different Hayes options isn't really realistic so would like to get the best opinions on here.

Cheers

  • 80-100 for a used set... I don't think that's unreasonable? (found some Stroker Rydes for 75, and the Carbons are on this forum for 100)

consider some avids, they are good brakes. You could get some used Juicy 5s or 7s, you could probably get some new 3s for that money too, and theres pleanty to be said for new disc brakes, as you won't run the risk of the hose being too short, the pads being crap and you'll get all the right adapters, no messing about that way!

  • How would Juicy 3's stack up against the Hayes (nines, HFX or strokers)? Like I said, I'm really impressed by the Hayes Nines on my gf's bike, but have never tried any Avids so can only compare to Deore and Giant MPH's

the avid juciy 3s i have used were better than the older deore, although I haven't ridden anything with the new style deore. The only Nines i have ever personally used ended up being swapped out for cable disc because they were terrible.

    How about some XTs?

my mate just got some new white juicy 3's for £80 and they atleast look pimp. Havn't tried them yet as he's just taken delivery of a baby and i'm trying to get him out but those things take up to much time
