I have just purchased a pair of rock shox reba race 09's and i don't know which headset to buy that'll fit my carrera kracken 09, well what's left of it anyway. Only drivetrain and frame that is original. I think it's intergrated but that's all i know.

any help would be gratefully received....

Do you need a new one? You don't need a new headset to fit a new fork, you just put the crown race on the new fork.
  • Yeah!

It's very, how can i say it.... F*****!

    A lot of radial play.

I've been talking at work and have come up with fully integrated 1"1/8th. Does this sound right?

If it is an integrated headset, you simply need new bearings. Have a look at the code on the bearing.

so was that before your removed the old fork? or when you fitted the new one?

  • supersonic- will have a look. thanks

nicklouse- i haven't took old forks out yet just incase it didnt get rock shox delivered for the weekend and i wanted to ride on saturday/sunday. If I take it to bits I don't think I'd get them back in....
  • Headset type will be an internal also known as semi integrated and also zero stack, these are now quite common on mtb's in today's markets (integrated headsets also known as hidden are usually found on roadies) your headset will have an internal headtube id of 44, this is what you need to look at in the specs of new headset, fsa, cane creek, hope all do them and prices range from £20 to £80, but if you buy cheap you buy twice as some will only last a year of dirty riding, hope this helps
  • Why thankyou!

An answer to my question.... Rather than another question.....

if it is an Internal headset and if it is a cartridge type there is a good chance that you only need new bearings. as opposed to spending money on a new headset and then removal and fitting costs.

  • No probs, I have had same issues with my giant bike, and had an email school lesson from the giant tech people on different headset designs, integrated headsets haven't made big inroads to mountain biking because there are to many different designs, it doesn't help when bike shops refer to your headset as an internel then next shop says it's a zero stack, best way to check is measure straight across middle of headtube, if it's 50mm it's definately what I explained it is, as fully integrated are smaller, another thing, to check, when you remove the bearing race it should leave your headset cup in the frame as fully integrated bearings run directly on the frame, it's all madness why they can't just have one type
  • Thankyou very much... I'll let you know how I get on. I'll be taking my tools home with me this weekend

Are you gonna go for the Fulcrums?
