go through a lbs, easier than doing a course, and you'll learn a lot more. Get qualifications once you've been a mechanic for a while for the specialist things like brake bleeding, wheel building and suspension servicing.
This of course assumes you are reasonably competent round a bike atm.0 -
Cheers will give lbs a go as job centre is probably not worh buttons0

if its any consolation the jobcentre wouldnt fund me when i asked as they have a set of courses that doesnt include bike mechanics.who cares?0

I was told that the job centre did not do bike mechanic courses by the disability advisor. I have therefore decided that i will do up and sell old bikes to fund my training course. I just need to buy some more tools. :evil:0

Stupid isn't it? Cycling is a big growth business at present despite the recession but they won't train people to get into the industry. I bet they fund brick laying / plumbing / mechanical engineering etc. courses despite there being a glut of qualified, experienced people out there trying to find jobs in those businesses. Would quite like to find a bike mechanic course that I could do in the evenings just to improve my own skills.0

ive been toying with the idea of being a mobile mechanic as where i live there arent a great deal of bike shops especially up weardale. i was also wondering if there were any grants available to open up just a repair shop.who cares?0

Cytec do a distance learning course. Their college courses are in Manchester. Funding, see if Citizens Advice have any ideas.Neil

Some charities collect old bikes and rebuild/service them for Africa, might be worth a call to some charities in your local area for any links. Or ask these for advise:

Maybe even start a local scheme and get charitable status.
Treat it as an apprenticeship until you feel using tools are a second nature.CAAD9

I decided to set up a community group at a church near me. I will be fixing and cleaning old bikes, accesories, clothing, etc. Presuming the stuff will be donated and people want to buy it off us. I am waiting for to have the conflab with the right bod at the church hopefully he will say yes. And blackpool council come up with the proficiancy/mechanic training course. If you want to do simmelar go on to the bikeabillity web site its a good help0
