Any thoughts on these?

Seem to be great value, £399 for a 50mm deep carbon wheelset, whats the catch? Anybody got a set and is going tubular as daunting as it sounds. If I did buy a set it would be for fast club rides and TT's. I'm 80kg would this be a problem?

They sure look like race wheels to me. Which brings up the question of why you would use them for anything else(i.e. fast club rides)? Generally speaking this type of wheel
was never intended for everyday use, unless you don't care about your money. They probably can't be trued by yourself and maybe not even a shop. Most likely will become unrideable if a spoke breaks. Buy them and RACE them for sure, but "just out riding" is
not the way to go. I know pros use this type of wheel a lot but they have the luxury of
simply tossing them in the trash if something happens to them and slapping on another pair at no cost to the rider. Great deal if you're a pro but I can't afford to simply pitch wheels like they do.0 -
I suppose I'm after the impossible, a wheel I can do everything on :?Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

It's not impossible. Lots of wheels out there you can "do everything on". Only problem is most of them don't LOOK like the pros wheels. They're called handbuilts or even factory wheels and they will let you do it "all". They look like standard wheels, and they are. More spokes, aluminum rims, maybe group set hubs, that sort of thing. You can even race them. And you can even make them yourself.0 -

Great! Can you make ME some? I'll have American Classic 420 rims, Campag Record hubs and something like DT Aerolites for doing TT's and triathlons on next season
And as you're from Ohio I won't throw in the fact that I follow the Denver Broncos
For "do everything's", I would suggest something like Campag Zondas - they've got ultra aero spokes and medium profile rims, together with Record standard hubs. You could throw something like the Reynolds Solitude into the mix, a practical 31mm rim with standard DT spokes (so cheap to replace) and Reynolds own-brand hubs.
The choice really is endless :P0 -
Ok then, my budget will be £500 MAX. They must be Shimano compatable, fairly aero(for TT's) suitable for a 80kg rider, able to race on(only minor circuit race ie Lotus) Not worried if handbuilt or factory.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

I've ridden my planet x's all year, TT's and clubs runs, not had a problem with them. Although they will be put to bed for winter0

Easton EA70s...0 -
Nice looking wheels Markos.
I ride my Easton EA 90 SLX's everywhere and love 'em to bits, with a DA7800 cassette...
They're going to be rested for the winter, as I have some handbuilt 105/ Open Pro wheels coming, to go with the Yukon.
Plus got a rear Powertap/ Mavic CXP 33 for training
At the end of the day, ride what you want, regardless of what they're tagged for. Never mind DennisN, if you want to ride 'race' wheels for your winter club runs, then do it... It's for your enjoyment.Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -

Ya got me all wrong. I could care less what people ride. Just offering up my advice on fancy wheels. If you race, and race seriously, then wheels like that are great, but If you simply ride them daily, then it's just being a poser. Sort of like wearing pro team kit. Say what you will about wearing what you want, but it's still "poser".0 -

Poser and Proud!
Not really. I know(or at least you claim) that you and many others are "posers". Great.
There's a little, or a lot, of showoff in all of us. Ali for example. A showoff of the greatest
proportions. I'm just calling them poser wheels for the vast majority of people who buy that type of wheel. They may say they love riding them but the reason for this love is it's good poser stuff. Not because of any perceived ride comfort / speed benefits.0 -

When I ride a bike, speed benefits don't remotely come into the equation!0 -

I think I would decide tubs v. clinchers first, then the choice between the planet x and the spanners in the works is made, rather than trying to discern any real difference between the two.
the black simplicity of those clinchers is a big contrast to the logos all over the px's though....0 -

I have one waiting for me at the LBS, who built it for me.
Apparently the braking surface doesn't last very long, so probably not a great daily wheelset.0 -

Send me the parts and I'll put them together. Actually, I've been tossing around different ideas for a wheel set for me to build this winter. Then my nephew harassed me until I said I'd take him big mountain skiing this winter.
I follow Denver too. Used to live there back in the 70's. Ugly uniforms in their last game.0 -
