Too cold for shorts?

  • I like this sort of weather I find summer too hot so love it as it cools down I might get tights for longer cold rides in deep winter.

Bit inbetweeny at the moment- probably go to 3/4s but no need for tights yet!

I don't think you actually notice the cold on your legs, probably because they're doing all the work. I wear shorts all year round although I'll now be wearing 'baggies' until the spring as the classic lycra cycle-shorts do let too much cold though around your hips.

I usually wear overboots in the depths of winter but that's usually to keep the crud off my shoes rather than defence against the cold.

My biggest problem on my last ride in was getting too hot even in the evening drizzle - can't say I noticed my knees at all. That said, I cheat by wearing a long pair of baggies that just about cover my knees :) Leg warmers purchased but no intention to use them until some time into November....

Unfortunately I do. I get cramps in my calf muscles if the cold gets to them. Not something you want to happen when climbing a hill in heavy traffic. I've had it happen often enough in the past not to want it to ever happen again.

I've been using tights for at least the last month. Call me a wimp if you like but I'd like to restrict my pain levels to that caused by overwork rather than cramp.

I was amazed today at the shear number of people cycling around London in shorts some in short shorts too :D

  • not quite short weather yet, It's positively balmy round here at the mo. I was out watching football last night in teeshirt till 10 pm.

I usually know when its long trous time when my hounds start shivering and want to go out in their coats in the morning.

Trust me mate, it's mild at the moment. The real "just saw a dog stuck to a tree" weather isn't upon us yet.

On subject. Still wearing shorts on all my rides no matter what time of day (or night)

i used to wear shorts all year around as a postie, no bike as the lay of the land wasn't suited to postie bikes.

Is there any evidence that cold knees damage?

I've been quite unconvinced by the argument that cycling in the cold damages your knees, too.

Bibshorts, baggies, base layer long sleeve top and sleeveless jersey today.

Felt quite good - I'm not used to base layers - I felt kind of sweaty buy not cloyingly so - and oddly pleasantly breezy as well as warm. Very strange, I think I like it.

Certainly don't need any more for the moment, unless it was unusually mild today.

That just made me chuckle a lot. The very idea is most amusing.

  • Came in this morning in shorts, long gloves and lovely lovely Endura Merino jersey. It's a miracle thing - never too cold, never too hot. I'm a sweaty motherfudger, and this thing keeps me dryer than anything else (and sweeter smelling). Was so so comfortable.

Knee warmers - are they worth it?

I'm totally nonplussed by the whole Merino thing. It just doesn't work for me and always ends up completely soaked after a long ride - no wicking qualities whatsoever. I do agree that its not smelly though.

All my merino stuff is Icebreaker, orignally bought for hill-walking. Is there something about Endura or other makes that make them better at wicking etc?

I was ridiculously mild today, earlier in the week it was much colder. We're not wussies honestly, it really was rather chilly

  • Came into work on Wednesday in thermal longs plus thermal base layer plus warm hi-vis long sleeve jacket plus gloves and thermal inners and absolutely bl**dy roasted. Can't stand being too hot and don't know what possessed me to "winter up".

Back into shorts, long sleeve tee plus short sleeve top and happy as Larry today, and the temp guage says 3 degrees colder .....

Sticking with shorts til I have to start scraping the icicles off my bars ......

I'd heard that merino didn't smell, so i'm not sure what's going on with my short sleeved merino icebreaker top that i've worn a total of about 10 times. There is a definite scent of stale boy, but only under 1 arm. :? I thought maybe it had been a dodgy wash cycle so washed it again without wearing it, and the smell is still there

Any suggestions how to get rid of single pit wiff from an almost new shirt?

Well - I am a sweaty mofo, so I can soak anything over the course of a quick pop to the shops, but the two baabaa shirts I have do a great job of evaporating the sweat away - if I hang them up while I'm showering, they're pretty much dry by the time I'm out. Don't know if it's just Endura, but I really recommend them - I've replaced my Helly baselayers with them.

Used to get called Max Wall when I used to wear tights and a Diamond Back fleece jacket. Only wear a jersey on my commute as the straps on my bag rub otherwise I'd go topless for December.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Try adding white vinegar or baking soda to the wash.
