I read this with a depressive stomach lurch...

14.6m watch the X Factor live heats
(UKPA) – 17 hours ago

The first of this year's X Factor live heats show was seen by as many viewers as last year's final, figures have shown.

Sunday night's show, in which ex-strippers Kandy Rain became the first rejects of the series, was seen by 14.6 million viewers at its peak - matching the peak figure for the 2008 finale.

Overall the ITV1 show - which sees Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh judging wannabe pop stars - had an average of 13 million viewers, which was a colossal five million more than the equivalent live heat last year.

Show bosses have moved the exit shows to Sunday nights instead of the Saturday night ejections which have taken place until now so they no longer go head to head with BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing.

The one-hour programme on Sunday drew 46 per cent of the TV audience at its audience peak.

It follows Saturday's programme - in which the 12 finalists gave their performances - which had a 12.8 million peak.

The network's website itv.com also attracted two million video views over the weekend - double that of the previous weekend.

ITV said the latest series is the most popular X Factor yet. Elaine Bedell, ITV's director of entertainment and comedy, said: "In its sixth series, this year's The X Factor continues to be more popular than ever, despite a particularly competitive weekend schedule. Across all of our platforms, whether it's ITV1, ITV2 or itv.com, the show continues to go from strength to strength."

Well, we couldn't do any worse given the current state of Saturday evening telly; X Factor, the shockingly naff Hole In The Wall, Strictly Come Dancing, and The National Lottery [1]. Thank goodness TV Burp is back, a sole crumb of comfort in an otherwise dire schedule.

Edit: although to be fair, all of the aforementioned dross provides TV Burp with some valuable comic material!

[1] The most overly padded-out show around? Just put the bloomin' numbers up on the screen and leave it at that!

It's just utter bo$$ocks isn't it? Hate the whole concept of people voting for (apparently) talent. Almost as pointless as 'celebrities' pi$$ing around on a dance floor on the other channel. Absolute drivel ....

Watching 'third rate boy band wannabes' get the false belief they might be heading for superstardom then breaking down in tears when its 'taken away from them' cos they're just plain sh1t? ...there's some good entertainment in that surely?
  • Variety shows have always been a cheaper-to-make form of TV than documentaries or dramas. Variety shows with amateur performers are even cheaper.

Isn't it a social safety valve? Your life may be dire in Gulag Island but at least there is the chance that you could raptured out of poverty by winning a talent show and becoming an instant star or winning the lottery...

Agreed, I stop watching when they are shot of the talentless and the wierd. I have never watched Nonentity Come Dancing either. Thank Rupert for Sky is what I say.

I actually prefer it when they get to the finals and don't watch the moron selection programmes before, cos by this time these wanabees think they've 'got a real shot' and the programme can't just say 'look 10 of them are downright crap really and would go the same way as Michelle McAnus or One True Voice...' ...so they all carry on thinking they can 'improve' and 'try their best' when in fact, they're just plain sh1t.

Of course some people watching think a fair few are alright but that's cos they get wrapped up in the show and pazaaz. I think its great just watching the ones you don't rate get brought back to planet earth with a slap and watching how much their stupid disillusioned families get all wrapped up in it. Plus, we all know the bulk of the voting is most likely regionalised or just based on young girls picking who they fancy or old women picking who's got the kindest face. Its only a few who ever rise above that IMO.

As a musician myself that's the bits I love watching, especially if you've written songs and put your all into being creative and get to see 95% of these copycat bland berks thinking theyve got talent then having their hopes dumped. Fantastic. (bit cruel??? ....yeah!! :) )

Hate X Factor, loved the Peter Kay parody of it all - can't believe some people didn't realise it was a spoof  - he had it down to a t and Cat Deeley and Pete Waterman were brilliant in mocking themselves.

That said I quite like Strictly - no problem with watching sexy, semi dressed ladies gyrating on a Saturday evening saves a few quid on going to the Fantasy Lounge
