Hit by a car

So i got taken out by a car yesterday morning, was proceeding straight when a woman just pulled out of a side road to cross the road i was on and clobbered me on my right side. Spent the morning in A&E and I've broken my right clavicle. Off to hospital again on Weds and I hope they'll give me a better sling and an estimate for healing time. It's bloody sore atm. Police have provided me with driver details and informed me that she's admitted liability, so hopefully insurance will pay out. I have no idea how the bike is, not seen it since the off as I was stretchered away with a neck brace on. Big thanks to the ambo crew who arrived in minutes and to the passers-by who stopped to help.

Not looking forward to a few weeks on public transport...

  • Sorry to hear that James....wishing you a speedy recovery.

    Where did this happen btw?

More importantly does this affect your drinking arm?

That sucks. :( But glad you're ok-ish, IP.

Were you on the Pearson or the Kinesis?

As I tweeted last night, sorry to hear about this. I've had a few near misses in my time, but I've escaped anything major. Positive sounding news at least about the insurance...

Sh!t, that sounds a bit nasty, awful timing considering all the other stuff you've got on your plate too. Hope the pain eases up soon enough, maybe this will force us to move Friday drinks even closer to your place out of sympathy. Hope the bike (presumably the SS?) isn't too badly off either.

    Neck brace tho'? HTFU FFS!!

It was the new Kinesis, and it's my drinking arm! Happened at the top of Willesden Lane, just thankful it's not worse, i think my courier bag cushioned a lot of the impact, but my lovely Castelli jacket had to be cut off and my watch has had a chunk taken out of it. Grrrrr.

    Unlucky Jash.

The clavicle is the most frequently broken bone in the body. I imagine that will be a comfort to you when you are in great pain and discomfort.

Having re-read your post - she came stright across the carriageway from the other side of the road!

Now I'm all for tweaky spidey senses around side roads on my side but she ambushed you good and proper.

    Get well soon.

    What a useless mare.
Sucks about the clavicle. But glad you are relatively ok James.

Hope the bike is not too bad. I presume not the Prince, was it the Pearson or the shiny new Decade?

I know, and it was daylight, she must be totally blind! Having to recover at the Girlfriend's as my flat is full of Polish builders atm! V poor timing.

    Thanks for the sympathy guys!
  • Bad luck IP, wishing you a speedy recovery. By the way, it's perfectly possible to drink with the wrong hand, it just takes practice, lots and lots of practice.

  • Ow. That sounds really sh!t.

However, I do think a bit of MTFU-ness is in order. Tyler Hamilton rode a goodly part of the TdF with a broken clavicle (supposedly at the expense of a couple of molars, which he ground down to distract from the pain). So we're all expecting you to get off your @rse and get back on the saddle before the week is out. Chop chop!

PS: best book a trip to the dentist now.

Very sorry to hear of your accident :?

I did mine last spring, and the sling from the NHS was less than comfortable, I bought one of these 3519_A8621.jpghttp://www.benefitsnowshop.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?bid=GDSL-2092602&item=2559
and it helped loads, as you can adjust the length of it which helps the arm a lot, and also means it doesn;t always have to be in exactly the same position.

I was very careful with mine, and the doctor said it couldn't have gone back in better with surgery, and I saw the x-rays to prove it.

Good luck with recovery, should be in rude health by Christmas, and maybe keep up some cycling on a turbo trainer if you have one?

  • Unlucky mate. Ask you docs for some codeine for the pain, that nails most things and if it doesn't then morphine will. Can be a bit moreish though.

I'm slumming it with the plebs too at the moment as I fecked up a rebuild of my bike. The one advantage is that I have rediscovered reading, 80 pages of a book I've been meaning to get stuck into for ages in the past 2 days.

sh!t man, not cool, hope you recover soon!

was run over a few weeks back, and new wilier written off :( so feel your pain, its such a PIA having to get it quoted at bike shop etc, but glad to hear you're mostly OK...

heal quick! I am now back in the saddle, albeit high vizzed up, hoping to avoid another SMIDSY...

 No helmet, no damage to my head. My little cap did the business and I kept my head up, as I was falling. As for Tyler Hamilton, chapeau, i can barely move the arm at the mo, but I have a big box of Tramadol which is good stuff.

Ah yes, the well known (to us) situational blindness. For example: this was something I didn't want to read so I missed it at first glance
my lovely Castelli jacket had to be cut off

Cheers, that sling looks good, my NHS one is basically a linen bandage, it's hopeless!
  • Glad to hear that you are well enough after the accident to tell us what happened.

Out if interest, what Castelli jacket was it? I am in the process of upgrading my cycle clothing to Castelli and it is always interesting to hear what other folks are (were *mourn*) wearing.
  • Forgot to mention...

Looking for new Castelli jackets while recuperating? Here is their Winter 09 catalogue from Saddleback, the UK wholesaler. Wiggle stock most of them of course.

  • Yeah, she really did properly ambush you, didn't she? Blimey... At least she's admitted liability. Take note of all the time you spend off work...

If it helps, I know a rather sharp consultant on shoulders and such - mended my friend whose shoulder dislocated from just looking at a rugby ball.

So does this mean we have to move friday beerz to Willesden?
