Does anyone have experience on carrying bikes on First Great Western trains from London Paddington to Bridgend?

Is it better to take the bike in a case soft/hard or just wheel it on?

I took my MTB from Paddington to Port Talbot last year. Booked in advance so the bike travelled free in the bike carriage. They have stands and velcro straps, but I'd lock it too as it's right at the front of the train and will be accessed by others before you.
