what is the diffrence between a medium and long cage mech. will a medium work with a 12-38 tooth cassette?

I think it goes off how many front chainrings you got.

Your cassette can not have a 36t rear cog.0

If you're running a single ring up front then a medium mech will work just fine.
Rule of thumb:
Single ring - Short cage
Twin ring - Medium
Three - Long
However this is not always 100% correct, it all depends on what tooth range you're running over. My Meta has 3 up front, but works just fine with a medium mech.Commencal Meta 55 Team custom build
