Is now a bad time for new wheels?

Currently running some Shimano WH-R550s which came with my Bianchi 928 C2C. At the time I got them I was told they were decent, reliable, easy to service wheels. Thing is, I can feel them flex when out of the saddle on climbs and I'm aware that they are not the lightest (1845g/pair). I need new wheels for my hack, so it makes sense to move the R550s to the hack and get new ones altogether for the Bianchi. At 76kg I could probably get away with lighter wheels but I'm wondering if coming into the winter, now is a good time to buy new wheels or should I just spend £80 for a pair of new R500s for the hack and make do with the R550s on the Bianchi?

I've got a bit of cash to spend on new wheels and I'm thinking along the lines of Easton EA70s but don't want to spend £300 on wheels that get trashed in the coming months.

Any advice gratefully received.

depends if the Bianchi gets taken out in the cr@ppy weather

my winter wheels are going on next week. The good ones will be put away until 2010 spring.

Yes, the Bianchi will go out in the crappy weather, with some of them new Crud race guards on them. Sounds like you've confirmed what I thought, trash the R550s over winter then buy new ones in the Spring.

I run my summer frame&fork throughout winter, as it's ti so I'm not concerned about corrosion.

but my good wheels, cassette, chain, seatpost, chainset+BB, stem and pedals are all swapped for basic/older/cheaper versions, now the inevitable doom of winter is on almost upon us...

Out of interest and whilst I'm on the subject, what are the collective thoughts on Easton EA70s?
