Probably the most respected one-day race in Italy after Lombardia and MSR, it has been part of the UCI Europe Tour since 2005 and takes place in Emilia-Romagna. It was first run in 1909 and since then, there have been only 12 non-Italian winners, the first being Merckx in 1972.

I doubt it will be broadcast anywhere although Rai will likely have highlights - if anyone has got links for streams that would be great?

Here is the startlist which includes a number of top-flight riders::
http://startlist.cyclingfever.com/start ... t&id=19441

The last ten winners have included some big names (dopers for the most part...)::

1999 lMichael Boogerd (NED)
2000 Gilberto Simoni (ITA)
2001 Jan Ullrich (GER)
2002 Michele Bartoli (ITA)
2003 Iván Gutiérrez (ESP)
2004 Ivan Basso (ITA)
2005 Gilberto Simoni (ITA)
2006 Davide Rebellin (ITA)
2007 Fränk Schleck (LUX)
2008 Danilo Di Luca (ITA)

I'm with you bu bu (cartoon saying ?)

This is where your missing riders at Paris - Tours are always to be found here for the week of Cycling ending with Tour of Lombardy and the normal season.

Before the German TV withdrew coverage of Cycling because of the Drugs (thats a laugh as they were the biggest instigators and made a Multi Billion $ telecomunications empire from it) they would show the Giro del Piemonte midweek live.
I once watched Virenque win this with his fantastic descending through the narrow streets.

I'm not 100% sure, but didn't the end of stage 14 of the Giro use the same climb?

That is correct - the climb up to the basilica at San Luca on the outskirts of Bologna

    Sounds quite exciting

Fuglsang, Lovkist, Gesink and Vinokourov were up the road a bit. Cunego and other big names not far behind

  • Great race. I watched the last 3 laps, last night, from RAI.
Fuglsang started the break, on the first ascent of "the bump".
Gesink on Lovkvist went after him, while Vino sat in the bunch.
Then, Boom! He went up the climb like a motorbike.

So, these four had the gap. Down the descent, Liquigas chased, but the lead went out. Kessiakoff came out of the pack on the descent and tried to bridge.
Szymd almost roped them in, on the next ascent, by himself, but blew.

Final climb, Fugslang attacks and gets away. Vino bridges, Fuglsang again attacks, at the steepest point, Vino blows up, big time.
Gesink and Lovkvist slowly close in. Kessiakoff stuck in no man's land.
    Out of the bunch comes.......Evans!

Lovkvist attacks early, gaps, then closed down. Gesink starts the sprint off the back of the three, only Fuglsang can respond.
    Gesink's win.

Evans takes 25" out of the field in the last km.

Gesink interviewed in English. Looking toward Lombardy.
RAI do close up of his knee. Looks ghastly, still. Like something picked up in trench warfare, not from the roadside pile up.

Thanks for the blow-by-blow Blazing. Sounded very exciting. Gesink is amazing and is going to reach great heights. Cadel impressive as per usual.
