I've been having a very heated debate with my girlfriend reently and we need to do some proper research.

Top for shirt and ties because you're naturally drawn to the face / neck area and there's usually mirrors about when you do it. put the right button in their and follow the rest down without looking.
Interestingly though, now I think about it, the jacket I put the bottom button in first.0 -
Top for shirt buttons- I think?! More likely to match the right button to the right hole then.
Probably looks cooler to start at the bottom though

I always start at the top, because on some shirts they have a spare button on at the bottom already. That could create a few problems It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Top to bottom for me apart from this afternoon i was so blitzed on Abbott Ale i couldn't button at all,so wore a t-shirt to go back out. :oops:0

This is wierd, I never do up the top or bottom button first. I usualy start somewhere in the middle then go down and then start from the top (bar top two) and do up the last couple going downwards.
Also as said before often don't undo buttons when taking off as it saves mucho time.0 -
