A friend and I are looking to head to either Cwm Carn or Afan for the first time. We're fortunate in that we live right in the middle of the two and are looking for advice which would be best suited. We've both got hardtail bikes and previously we've been riding the forestry and bridle pathways nearer home.

So the question is, Afan or Cwm Carn for a first timer?

well i don't know afan too well, but would thoroughly recommend Cwmcarn to 1st timers. It's been a while since I was a newbie but it think that finding your way round shouldn't be too hard - it's busy enough that there's always someone to ask. Turn up early enough to get a good parking space though.

i absolutely love cwmcarn but if it's you're first time i would highly reccomend the Penhydd trail at afan. the climb is easier and the decents are still good, with the green run being really fun :D and desolation singletrack short but good.

the final decsents at cwmcarn are amazing and so's the freeride track up the top but the climb is a killer

I would go to Afan and use the Penhydd trail as first timer, it's the old centre on the right hand side of road after coming off M4.

Cwmcarn trail is breaking up badly at the moment and it need repairing at the moment, once repaired, it's a fun trail, so aim for Afan now.
