Hi guys- more advice please :D

Im trying to decide which bike is more appropriate for me for the following:

Commuting/General Paths
Tracks etc- a tiny bit of proper off road but nothing too hardcore.

I can get a Trek 6000 2010 for £700 locally (may get a few free accesories thrown in)

Spec: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/mo ... ries/6000/

OR

I can get a Specialized Rockhopper Pro 09 for £850 locally- but i dont think they will budge on the price much

How much better is the Rockhopper? I would like a bike that holds its value well and i wont need to upgrade anything.

How much profit is a local company likely to be making on the rockhopper? Is there margin to haggle? If it was say £750 i would just do it! :D

Cheers for your help fellas :D

  • I'd personally go for the 'hopper. Better fork, better kit and I *think* it's a better frame too.

£850 is not a bad price you know (assuming it's new and not an ex display or ex-demo or anything). Most places that still have them are selling them for £900+

I VERY much doubt you'd get them to come down much at all on price, but you may be able to negotiate some kit into the deal.
  • I've got the rockhopper pro 09 and i think its great , took everything i've thrown at it so far , coed y brenin , llandegla etc , when i was looking at the beginning of this year the trek 6700 was about the equivilent bike but the rockhopper felt better when i tried it , best thing to do is try them and see which you feel more comfortable with :D

    Miles.....
And you won't need to upgrade anything on it, it's has top end components.

While the Trek, it has the spec that you see on a £500 bikes.

As mintsauce5 said, look at the Trek 6700 or at least 6500.
  • really? thats interesting!

i really do like the Rockhopper- but i just dont know if i can justify £850! Maybe if that was all i needed- including mud guards, helmet, gloves, shoes etc

How well do these bikes hold their money? Say i decided to move into road bikes in 3 years- would i still get say £400 for it? Or does demand whither away after a few years?

tbh i bought i hybrid then went on a trail !!!! sold it that week ony a month old and bought a rockhopper expert for £740 best thing i ever did
  • nice- they have the expert on sale for £700 which looks nice

Anyone any experience on a GT Aggressor? They seem to be pretty good value and there is a dealer near me. Although i notice that Halfords also sell them.

Im currently trying to decide between spending £400 and £800- i just dont know how much value im gonna get out of this thing!

    Most likely, or even more.

Also the Expert has very good components, and for the same price as the Trek 6000 you get, hydro brakes, a lot better fork, better drivetrain and lighter bike. And you'll still have enough money to buy the rest of your equipment.

About the Aggressor XCR, 140mm of fork travel may be too much for you, but if you like,
it won't be a bad choice.
  • I'm no second hand price expert, but I would be surprised if you got a return of 50% on a 3 year old bike in that price range. Obviously any return would depend on condition of the bike, as well as how out of date the spec is, service history, upgrades, etc, and we won't know the answer to that until three years time.

You really shouldn't make your decision based on residuals. You know what your real budget is, it's your money, so spend it wisely. Buy your bike based on what you know now, not what may happen later.

My bad. Don't know how I missed the 3 years part.
I should read more carefully.
  • Both of these are good bikes but you really can`t go wrong with a Rockhopper. If you can get the Expert for £700 buy it.

    2010 Giant Defy Advanced
    2016 Boardman Pro 29er
    2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
    2017 Canondale Supersix Evo
  • apparently the Pro has a different internal mechanism (dunno what its called- the bit where the pedals go into!)- its a more modern efficient mechanism!?

While I think the frame on the Trek is slightly better, the component on the hopper are much better.. I'd go for the spesh - even though I am not really a fan of the rock hopper.
