Spare wheel interchangeability

I want to use my (only) bike on a turbo over the winter months.
From reading other posts I gather the best way to do this is to get a spare wheel and put a training or old tyre on it and swap the wheels over before putting the bike on the turbo.

In order to make this process as painless as possible (i.e. avoiding indexing issues and high/low derailleur screw adjustments) do I need an exact duplicate of the WHR500 wheels and Tiagra 9 speed cassette I currently have on my bike at the moment?

Ideally I would like to get some Ultegra open pro wheels and put on a Tiagra 9 speed cassette and I was wondering if this would cause me any problems.

As long as you have a nine-speed Shimano (or SRAM) cassette on it you can use any wheel.

    Great, thanks.

Does that mine I could use a 9 spd 23-12 cassette on one wheel and a 9 spd 25-11 on another without any problems?

Probably, as long as the chain/cassettes aren't too worn.

A better idea would be to acquire an old frame and rig it up permanently on the turbo. My turbo bike is a very bent old frame that doesn't even have a proper headset in it and a single chain ring. It doesn't need to be either road worthy or particularly high quality to be effective.

Old cyclists never die; they just fit smaller chainrings ... and pedal faster
