Mullered my front wheel....

Managed to taco my front wheel landing badly off a jump. Nothing mad, just a couple of feet. Had to walk for an hour to get back to the carpark :-(
Anyway, to the matter in hand:
I'd like to buy a cheap cheap cheap front wheel to get my bike back out on the trails again - suggestions as to where/how much, etc?
Also, long term, I suppose I ought to replace both wheels cos they're just not designed for my clumsy cack-handed attempts at airtime - they're Mavic 117 Disc rims on Shimano FH M475 hubs.
I'm 6'5" and approaching 16 stone in weight, so need something strong! I know I'm going to have the trade-off of more rolling mass, but I don't seem to have much choice - unless I stop doing jumps, which I don't want to do. Preferably cheap-ish as well, cos I don't have much fundage.
Can you peeps chime in with suggestions for these as well?
Also, being vain, if possible I'd like something all in black (hubs/spokes/rims). Or pimp-red would be even better, but I know I'm dreaming now!

Hmmm, you've now given me the idea to replace my front wheel now with something strong, and then replace the rear when money allows or I break it.
I have no problem with the Deore hub, I mean a hub is a hub to me, so long as it don't break - but the Mavic XM 317 rim - is that gonna be strong enough for me? I've looked quickly at reviews on MTBR and people don't rate it for heavier riders like me.
The list of available rims on CRC goes on and on - I don't really know where to start!0 -
No way strong enough. Not for jumping.
Go for the EN321.0 -

Go for the EN321.
Reviews look good on this rim. Unfortunately it's not in the list for CRC to custom build a wheel. I'll have to have a search online to see if I can find a complete front wheel using this rim.
Alternatively I guess I could just buy the rim and have a shop build it onto my current hub. What does this usually cost? And can anyone recommend a wheelbuilder round my way (Ipswich or close-ish in Suffolk) that will do a good job?0 -
Also, will a 36 hole rim make a stronger wheel than 32 hole? Is there much difference in weight for the complete wheel?0
-
Try the EX721 as a alternative.
36 hole is alittle heavier, a little stronger.0 -
i would try some halo tornados, really strong rims, not very expensive and they come on spindoctor hubs which have sealed bearings so should last you a while. They're about £80 off CRC (when they come back in stock)0

CRC only have the silver, black not in stock - PANTS!
I know I'm being vain but mismatched wheels will look rubbish... Maybe they might come back in stock soon. Think I'll email them and see, and also ask if perhaps they can build a wheel with the EN 321 which they do have in stock.0 -

heavier than needed. the freedom would be the Halo for this use."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

These do look really strong - but as you say, not in stock, and I was hoping for something a bit cheaper. Also, I don't think white will go with my bike... Thanks for the suggestion though!0 -

Ah, I think you've sorted it!
Merlin have the EN321 in black, decent price as well when laced to Deore hubs. Think I'm gonna order up my front wheel now.
Final question - plain gauge or double butted spokes?0 -
DOuble butted.0

DB."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Double butted it is! Best just go and check that tyre is ok and not ruined as well - if it is then I'll need to buy one of them.
Thanks a lot guys - much appreciated, you've saved me a lot of time and hassle researching and trawling t'internet!0 -
One more question - is it worth listingmy old hub (Shimano FH M475) on the classified board, or is it worth about £2.50 and therefore I should just chuck it in the spares box? It is in good condition as far as i can tell.0
-
keep it for any spares you may need.
IE take the cones and balls and axle out and bin the reast."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

In the shed it goes then, along with all the other crap I hoard in there! Cheers!0

My new wheel arrived today - well pleased with it so far, looks a lot beefier than the old one! Not had a chance to ride it yet.
Another question - the tyre on that wheel had a slightly bent wire bead, where the old rim cracked. I bent it back straight and it seems to have gone onto the new wheel ok. Am I going to have trouble with it at a later stage do you reckon?
I could just replace it I guess, but I'm loathe to do this unless its needed, as the tread isn't knackered yet!0
