Hi,
Currently i have Ultegra (bought May 2006) on my bike which I am moving over to another frame. I plan to upgrade/renew the derailleurs and was wondering if the new Ultegra/Dura ace are compatible. Also, would this be Ultegra 6300 i currently have?
If I was to replace the current Ultegra Crankset, what would you recommend which is not too expensive?

Thanks

Any Ultegra and DA up to 7800 will be fine.

Not sure about DA 7900 though.

Re. chainset - define "not too expensive"...

Ulterga SL is fine. SRAM Red is nice too. 7800 DA gets good reviews. Compact or std?

  • Thanks for that.
As for the chainset, I was looking for something in the same region as the Ultegra, up around £200ish.
I really just want something that looks good on the new frame. Should be a Cervelo R3 and aim to get it this weekend.

    Thanks

if you're on a standard c/set (39/53) then I've sometimes seen the 7800 Dura Ace for close to 200 I think, and is very capable.

If you want compact then there's a load of options

SRAM Red - I've got one and it's light, stiff and handsome. You may need to get lucky to find one at £200 but it's doable (I did).

SRAM Force for 2010 is outwardly quite red-like

Planet X are having a big sale on cranksets at the moment, lots of options there.

I have a Dura Ace 7800 crankset myself and it is very good. As is the Ultegra you already have, I wouldn't necessarily be in a rush to upgrade/change that.

As for compatibility, here is a chart that outlines the official position. It is a copy of a Shimano PDF. More stuff may be compatible in practice than Shimano is willing to say. AFAIK new Ultegra 6700 is 100% compatible with new Dura Ace 7900 so if you just substitute 6600/6700 for 7800/7900 should be the same story.
  • CRC had some great deals on FSA carbon cranksets at well over half price. They even hacve the team issue one I have on my bike. Its a lovely piece of kit.
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!
