the downs on the south of the island have trails all over them, hav'nt been "up north" much but looking at the OS map there's loads of off road routes up there too. the hills killer route is good, if you like hills. then there's the popular tennyson trail with stunning views. easier rides like the old railway cycle paths, shanklin-wroxall, carisbrooke-sandown, newport-cowes, freshwater-yarmouth. plus the hudreds of miles of bridal ways. google earth is pretty handy too :)

i seem to remember enjoying riding through america wood at speed from south to north. it's a bit west of shanklin and should be worth sticking in at least once if you're in that area
Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.
  • america woods south to north is the first bit of my loop

i love the downhill type start then the rest is bumpy flowy singetrack

gotten lane sounds familer so maybe? dunno. yep that was prolly me limping along in the wind n rain and i prefer riding alone but do appreciate the offer :) i often ride along the hills killer route on dry days but the 14 hills would be a bit beyond my limit of pain heh. 5 or 6 hills hills then a bit of a picnic and an easy ride home is my ideal riding day.
  • Only got into MTB recently after I entered a South Downs Way Randonnee, summer 2009, thinking it would be on roads like our IOW randonnee. Slight misconception. 100miles XC on my 29er commuting hybrid, various nav errors, 13 hours, but a big smile at the end. The Trailbreak MaXx Exposure SDW night ride was even more rad and far faster.
In Bembridge we have a small 3-level MTB humpy thing at Steyne Park and people appear to be trying to develop the short DH down from the Windmill into Steyne Wood a little. Culver Downs has good trails, mainly grass or chalk and, if you look hard enough, has 3 or 4 jumps. I assume that it is legal to ride on the open ground there.
I have found, or made, GPS tracks of all the IOW trails and bridleways that I can find and look forward to exploring them when the weather eases a bit. I commute to Newport - mainly via the section of NCN23 that goes from Alverstone to Newport and have mapped some XC diversions etc to try in better weather.
I hear that Brighstone has the best trails and a bit of a downhill but have not investigated yet.
There is also 'Dirt Wood' somewhere not far from Yarmouth. Anybody know where that is? Both featured recently in a recent mag article.

If anybody fancies any trail jaunts then just get in touch.

  • I found the (a?) Brighstone Downhill run on Monday - Jan 18th - it was in pretty bad shape, understandably at this time of year. Pretty slippy with mud and leaves. The jumps aren't jumpable for now as the landings are mud pits. I managed to scramble down precariously then spent time clearing fallen branches etc. 2nd run interrupted two thirds through when bike picked up long thin branch. 3rd run was fun. It appears to be 100m drop over 600m length.
The forest's Design Plan says this section of forest is planned to be felled and re-planted with Douglas Fir (for grow&sell) from 2006 to 2013 but no sign of any start yet. - am guessing they can't get enough money for the old Beech to make it self-funding. Any which way, best to enjoy it while you can.

  • Hi Guys

Matt here from Top Gear Vehicle Rentals on the Island, we do cycle hire from Cowes and Sandown. If your just after normal bog standardish routes we have most of them on our website http://www.islecycle.co.uk

I am however interested in adding some more downhill stuff to our site, so if anyone has any maps or links to maps that I could use it would be great. Don't do much cycling myself as working 6 days a week long hours takes it out on you, but I do appreciate a bit of cycling when I can.

Great route from Bembridge is out round the harbour, up through St Helens then round the coast road, down Atrills Lane to the back of Tesco, cross Beaper shute and down harding shute to Ashey. Up on to the Downs by Nunwell Farm along the top for a bit then down in to Alverstone (steep at the top) a great fun downhill. Through Alverstone up and out the other side round the bridleways to Sandown Airport. Along the back of Lake/Shanklin through Lower Hyde to America Wood, through the wood (S to N) back along the road to Apse Cross then either through Borthwood or down Skinners lane to the top of Alverstone and down burnt House lane to take the old railway back to ST Helen's, or right at Brading and around Culver taking Peacock hill back to Bembridge (more fun before they cindered it)

I don't think you should really ride on Culver itself, the paths are all marked as foot paths rather than Bridleways or Byways.

There are some great rides from Godshill around the hills and the "bowl" of the Island. If you head off towards Newport from there, there are some fun bits around Carisbrooke (but I don't get much time to explore now I have a family).
Kona Caldera 1998 (I love good steel)
Trek 8000 circa 2001 (Al crap)
Dawes Kickback 500 circa 1992 (well most of the bits anyway.)

PS The Council did a whole series of rather good maps of routes a few (probably about 15!) years ago with I think 4 different maps for East, West North and South of the Island, I think I've still goat a couple.
