Hi, i currently own a Giant Trance X3 which i have already buggered up in just 3 months of aggressive riding, im looking to buy a new bike in a few months with a bump up in travel and DH pedigree, i was thinking about the Reign 1, is this bike any more DH orientated than the trance other than having an extra inch of travel? or would i have to be looking at a Reign X to do a Cwm carn ride every couple of weeks. any views appreciated
Thanks

Ive bent the rear wheel twice, both discs have had to be replaced, as well as the rear mech. I also bottom out every time i ride at llandegla :? bearing in mind i only ride once or twice a week (currently doing GCSE's which take up most of my spare time) this is a lot of killing in just 3 months

Sounds like you just need some more air in the shock

How do you mean? ive set up the shock for my weight (9 stone), ill admit i only ever bottom out on the jumps, however i do want to get into DH/FR a little more and didnt think the trance was the best candidate. Im just wondering whether the Reign is strong enough?

You are meant to be just about bottoming out your shock on bigger hits/jumps - just means you are using all the travel.

None of the jumps at Llandegla are that big and as long as you land them properly you could easily do them on a hardtail.

That said if you want to get into DH but still want a bike you can pedal around then a reign is probably a reasonable bet. It's not going to stand up to DH racing or big freeride drops/jumps but it doesn't sound like that's what you will be doing.

Could also look at a Specialized Pitch.

You need to look at what you want, rather than just more DH pedigree.

It might be worth looking at something a bit tougher without going to buckets of travel. One of the 150mm marins, orange 5, i think you'd probably kill a meta, a spicy, pitch/enduro would be nice, genius you might kill, ransom

    That help?

Blimey wish I could have afforded two new bikes in the space of 3 months whilst doing my GCSE's

Indeed - I am 29 and work full-time and thought I was being quite extravagant getting my Pitch on the cycle to work scheme.

You need to look at what you want

I think he needs to look at his technique and bike setup personally...

    He needs a hardtail.

    So do I.

How much sag are you running? NEVER go by what it says on the shock for pressures - how the hell do they know what the leverage ratio of your bike is, or weight distribution, or preferences?

when you say cwmcarn do you mean the DH corse or the XC track?

if its DH you are riding then yeah go for the Reign. Giant do tend to put weak components on trances, ive pretty much replaced everything on my 2007 trance 3. if you dont take care and maintain your bike then the parts will break tho (keep your spokes tight)

the rear mech probably would have broke no matter what mech or bike if you smacked it on something. i have no idea how you break brake discs?

it sounds like you are riding a bit outa control and sketchy, im sure the jumps at Llandegla have transitioned landings

if its xc your riding:i think you should just keep your bike and get stronger wheels and couple bits rather than blowing shed loads of money, i know people who have built trances up as 4X bikes so they are definately not weak bikes.
with that said if its only DH your riding get a beefier bike
Dont look at it-ride it! they are tools not f*cking ornaments

A Trance X is the perfect style of bike for Llandegla. If you are bottoming it out, you do not have the shock set up correctly and the additional shock load on the bike will take its toll on components.

I probably do :? but i do want a more DH orientated bike, im already faster than my mate even though he rides a 6 inch Kona coiler. Oh and my three previous bikes have been hardtails and i much prefer the FS

More travel will not make you a faster or better rider, that all comes down to skill, set up your bike properly first before spending more money on something you may not need.

The reign certainly is a nice bike but for places like Llandegla it may be a little too much, would probably feel pretty nice on Cwmcarn DH track though.

If it's not shock preasure, try the damping, if you are a light rider I would try turning the damping right down (torwards the hare!)
