Is it possible to put cyclo X tyres on my road bike.
At present the bike has got 700c x 25 ( what ever that means !) tyres on? Wheels are Planet-X's model C's 32 hole.
Also, when I'm in the drops the brakes, Ultegra SL, are scarily far away from my fingers, is there any way to remedy this. Some kinda shim stratigcally placed.
Any ideas anyone?
Last thing, anybody know owt about a ,Pro-lite Elbrus Carbon stem, wieght etc.
Cheers
Ian

Tyre clearance will vary from frame to frame and according to the wheels used. For example, my road wheels with 30mm CX tyres fit on my CX bike, but my hybrid wheels with 30mm tyres rub on the chainstays. Also, 30mm tyres are 'roughly 30mm' so it's difficult to measure in advance. I think you'll need a trial fitting at a bike shop before you buy if you're in doubt.

Shimano do a 'Lever Adjusting Block' that puts the levers closer to your hands (standard on most women's bikes so they don't have to make womens levers). Like this http://www.ebikestop.com/st_r600_5_right_lever_adjusting_block-LD7780.php?cat=620. Apparently LD7780 to 7783 are what you're after.

I've got some of those Lever Adjusting Blocks. You can have em if you pm your address as I got them with my new steed.

Generally, most roadbikes will struggle with anything bigger than a 28mm and you need a lot more clearance, otherwise mud build-up will grind you too a halt - cross bikes have about 10mm tyre clearance and use canti brakes for extra clearance. You might get away with a road bike on a dry, hard or sandy course, but if it's damp or muddy you'll be walking.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Aside from frame clearance this also raises the question whether CX tyres are compatible with road rims.

I've got Shimano road rims on a Van Nicholas Amazon so my frame is okay for clearance - I was thinking of putting CX tyres on it and I found some good advice on rim vs tyre widths on Sheldon Brown's site:
    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html

If you've got skinny rims I'd look at the rim width / tyre width chart on that page before ordering CX tyres.

I've always used standard 19mm rims with 28mm cross tyres in the past.

You can run 32mm cross tyres on standard road rims no problem - but in terms of the OP's original question, they're unlikely to fit a standard road frame

I've seen people run 29er tyres on Mavic Open Pros. Seems to work ok. But I don't think a frame with Ultegra short reach brakes is going to have clearance for anything more than 25c road slicks. Sorry. Buy an older mountain bike :)
