Public liability insurance

Taking part in a bike race at the weekend and the application form states:
"All riders must have 3rd party liability insurance"
I'm usually the kind of person who takes these things with a pinch of salt but should I really sort something out?
A quick review of the CTC and British Cycling websites tell me I can join for £36 or £24 respectively and get the required insurance with the "added benefit" of a magazine and other associated junk mail.
So I guess my question is there a cycling organisation which churns out a decent magazine with insurance on the side which people recommend? If No, then is one more deserving of my money than the other?
Personally I'm tempted by British Cycling simply because if I've got to spent £25 per year I may as well help promote the sport.

I'm a member of CTC, I also commute to work (shhhh, keep that quiet ok) and figure that if some twunt tries to run me over one day, I'll be glad of the free legal cover they offer. It's only £3 per month and CTC do loads of work to promote cycling facilities and cyclists rights throughout the UK.
Think it's much of a muchness between them and British Cycling though as far as I am aware.
The Magazine is ok, the offers are ok. Nothing mindblowing though. Kind of the Cycling equivalent of the Sky magazine.0 -

Question is, would you rather spend £35 on a 12-month sub, or risk having some jobsworth tosser from Claims Direct jumping all over you for a £50,000 compensation claim?0
