Was watching the 89 tour last nite on DVD & was reminded of Delgado arriving late for the prologue. Was there ever an explanation given for his being over 2mins late starting? Phil & Paul seemed to gloss over it!

He lost that Tour because it

The following day Reynolds was the last team in TTT, waiting for Delgado, that couldn´t sleep that night thinking i´m silly.

Before first ITT Delgado was the last one in overall clasification over 7 min. from Lemond and Fignon.

For me 1989 Tour is the best of the history, with Delgado all days breakaway in mountains stages and Fignon and Lemond fighting each other every single day.
If you like Flandes, Roubaix or Eroica, you would like GP Canal de Castilla, www.gpcanaldecastilla.com

He warmed-up on his bike in the roads of Luxembourg, so they couldn't find him in time to bring him to the startramp.

    It really was a thrill.

I find the warm-up exlanation very srtrange and wonder if there is something else to it, he also said it was because of a new watch he was given by his uncle or something! Back in those days people fell for anything!

Picture the scene! The night before the Annecy TT Lance & Johan are watching a re run of this prologue. One looks at the other, and thinks what if???

The July edition of Cyclo Sport magazine had a 20-odd page special on the 89 tour.

It says it was to do with a policeman stopping him from warming up near the start then he got lost or something like that in the back-streets.

Yes, he was just late warming up, in the days when riders didn't use rollers and didn't have heart rate / power meters on their bars with built in clocks. He lost track of time.

Roche also missed his start in the TTT 2 years later-eliminated by his own team on the road.

Delagado got dropped by his own team in the TTT 3 days later in 89...team leader on an off day being shown up by his domestiques.

Given that pro cycling races are never or mostly never what they appear...

    No other logical explanation,is there?
He'd nothing to gain whatsoever by arriving late, had he?
If he didn't fancy doing the TDF for whatever reason, then why put in the effort to climb the rankings from last after the prologue,to third in Paris?
Think you might be looking a bit too deep?
    so many cols,so little time!
