Why twitter?

I understand why famous people publish thoughts through twitter ...self-promotion and exposure that kind of thing... but why do 'nobodies do it?' ...this is a naive question cos I don't use it myself ...is it an attention seeking thing then or is there a reason for it that I am missing?

You are not alone, its just another idea that people seem to have embraced that realistically means nothing.

Well... famous people aside then I do understand it, say, for certain purposes... say you went off round the world, with your phone you could keep all your friends up to date with where you were, all at once for example.

But... if its just your day to day thoughts and you're doing nothing out of the ordinary and are 'just a bloke' then its gotta be attention seeking... if I did it and told my friends I was doing it they'd laugh their heads off at me, quite rightly so.

Well, not really, cos forum threads are discussions about stuff aren't they? ...twitter feeds aren't.

So, its just one of those things then that 1) famous people use, 2) people use to communicate with a bunch of people cos they need to in an easy fashion cos they're on the move, and 3) attention seekers

...like I said, I might be missing something cos I don't use it.

And I for one am so grateful :D

Seriously though. I cough...use twitter...cough. There are some genuine reasons. Firstly I follow fanzines of my football team, so instead of going to all their websites, I see updates on my twitter history. Also I follow some groups who work in my industry so I pick up bits of information about things that are useful to me in work.

In terms of regular guys, then I have a couple of people I follow who are really funny. How they do it, I don't know, but they do!

I have also found some people with regular interests to myself, similar to some of the guys you talk to on forums, you just connect with what they say, they are not quite friends yet, but they have useful insights either to my hobbies or to my work, so are worth keeping in touch with.

Oh and finally I have friends who I can also keep up with. It just ends up to be easier than email

Admittedly there is a lot of rubbish to filter too!

Is that better than my original pointless reply? :D

Yeah... sort of... well, I can see the 'following fanzines' bit, I don't get how the people network on it you see, cos I haven't looked at it in depth... but I suppose I was looking at it more from the point of view that if I have anything interesting to say to my mates or something I'll tell them in the pub, but i see this endless verbal diarrheoa on twitter feeds and it all seems so 'for the sake of it' and 'please think im interesting' most of the time (the proper uses I have listed aside).

...and you twitter yeah... I can see the point that people may be interested to hear what you have to say if you have a background like that and are commenting on cycling.
  • Meh, it's just a way of my friends and I to keep in touch, share interesting thoughts and opinions throughtout the day, and in general just connect. Sure there are the attention seekers, but that comes with everything and all social networkings sites. I mean I couldn't count the number of people on facebook who openly flaunt photo albums of trivial matters in their day to day lives.

Also, I use twitter to give people information about scores of local athletic events and current event happenings.

    My thought- Josh
