HG50 to HG 40 ? Extend chain?

Hi,

In order to facilitate hauling my overweight backside up some hills, I've decided to change the rear cassette. I was running a 53/42 and now a 53/39 to help, but feel that i need to move to a 11/30(HG40) at the rear as opposed to my current 11/25.(HG50)

The question is, will I need to lengthen the chain in order to do this or will the rear derailleur compensate.

It is a 8 speed Shimano cassette.

I'd like to think that I don't have to, as it is quicker to change cassettes as and when appropriate!

Cheers

Stewart

It depends on which mech you have and how long the chain is now. If you have a Shimano road mech, Sora, Tiagra, 105 etc, long or short cage, then the largest cog you can safely use is 27 (28 at a pinch).
If an MTB mech, Deore, LX, XT etc, then you can run up to a 32 (may be 34). The safe chain length is govened by your biggest ring and cog sizes. Normal setup is to put the chain round the big ring and big cog but not through the mech, then add 2 full links.
You will be able to change back to the smaller cassette with no trouble.
