Hi folks wondered if you could help me solve my dilemma, been mountain biking for a few years now and love every minute my problem is i currently got a giant trance 3 08 which is a great little bike but have decided i want to go back to a hard tail, the problem is i have only got about £700 to buy one (missus on my back lol) but would like a longer fork for more hard hitting adventures, I have been searching the net for some great deals but having trouble decidng between a few bikes, Genesis core 20 £599, Merida trail tfs 500d £749 and a specialized rockhopper exp £699 the latter only being 100mm fork though but better overall spec, please help me make a good decision as cant affrod to replace for a few years (any other bike suggestions welcome) Thanks Matt.

do you have a bucket of spare bits and bobs lying around at home?

I'd spec up an On-one 456. You'll need to build it yourself and for 700, I think you may struggle with a decent build unless you have some bits lying around from previous upgrades. A little searching and careful speccing though and it should be possible.

Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

    if that aint posible, welll.......
check my sig. the agressor xcr my friend, tis a sweet bit of kit! i love mine, and its often reduced from £800 to £750. the only problem is the fork can be unreliable, however once youv overcome fears its easy to eork on yourself, and you have 3 year warrenty. i have mine working sweet as a nut now!
    I like bikes and stuff

Rockhopper - I've had one for over 2 years and I can't fault it. The frame is excellent and easily upgradeable with lighter, stronger components as and when your budget allows. Also the lifetime warranty on the Spesh make it bit of a no-brainer but not sure about the warranty deals with other manufacturers.

  • I'd go with the Specialized if you want to buy new. Alternatively, eBay is great if you've managed to ride what you're bidding on beforehand (and you could just buy a pile of bits to build yourself) or trawl your LBS's for second hand bargains. Buying secondhand from a LBS means they'll have serviced it and you're less likely to be buying a lemon.

You might want to leave about £40 for a decent suspension seatpost if you've been full-sus for a while, the repeatedly-being-kicked-in-the-arse thing takes a little getting used to :-)
  • Thanks for all the advice will check a few of the bikes out and see which one i prefer,
