My other half has been looking vaguely for a road bike (her first proper one). A friend has offered her old bike (change of sponsor, so change of bike), but I think the pricing is a bit out of whack.

Spec is:-

Specialized S-works Tarmac frame& forks (2006, gerolsteiner colours, vgc)
Mavic Kysrium Elite wheels (mint)
Campag Centaur rear mech and brakes (secondhand, OK condition)
Campag Xenon shifters, cranks, f/mech, cassette etc (brand new)
Finishing kit is a mix of bits they had lying around. OK, but nothing exceptional (womens bars though)

SO... What do you think its worth? I know what they want, I know what *I* think its worth, but what do you guys reckon...?

Thanks!

Jon

I would have though somewhere in the region of £800-£900.

£500 tops - and that's mainly for the frame and wheels - Xenon kit on a frame of this spec is distinctly low-rent.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Thanks guys - you've pretty much confirmed my thoughts. They're asking a LOT more than the prices you've been suggesting.

The Xenon kit is definitely a "fill in the missing bits" effort - the bike used to run Dura-ace SRM cranks and (I think) Chorus shifters, but I think they've been moved onto other bikes. I'd seen the bike before all it's downgrades, but wasn't very impressed by the Xenon stuff at all when I saw it in it's "for sale" spec.

The current version of the frame is upward of £1500 and the wheels retail around £350 so I would have said a fair price would be around £700 - £800. Shame half the group set is such a low standard for a bike of this quality. There you go, 4 responses all different. I guess the only way of getting an accurate value is to see what they are selling elsewhere second hand or to work out what other similar aged bikes sell for as a percentage of the current models RRP :?

To be honest that Xenon kit is like if it wasn't there but I priced it this way:

    Frame - £400-£500
    Wheels - £150-£200
    Groupset - £100
Finishing Kit - not much details but would have though at least £50

You've overpriced the frame - if you have the right contacts, you can buy new ones, yes Specialized, for £400 and never pay more than half-price for used wheels.

Problem is not many of us have the right contacts though.

Agreed its a nice frame but £1500.....the SL2 2009 frameset is around that figure or less. If you could still get one, a new 2006 standard frame would be a lot less.

I basically looked at the bike and priced it for frame and wheels only. The groupset is not viable for anything else other than a winter hack. I came to a figure around £600 max. It has been used, been raced and is probably at least 3 years old.

To the OP, what figure do they have in mind?

But if I let you know, you'd all want one!

is that a problem? If they are selling it for £400 that means they are making a profit so I would have though it would be in their interest to sell me one. I am interested!
