Newbie: Airlite400 or Defy 3?

Hi,
I am looking at bikes around the 500 price mark-as far as I can tell not much between them. Anyhow I found ashcycles selling airlight 400 and Defy 3 at the right sort of price point. The airlight has the higher rated GS it being Tiagra rather than the Giant with the Sora however the Giant is a Triple whilst Raleigh is compact.
Now, I should point out that I have a bad left ankle after a serious RTA several years ago- this doesn't stop me cycling however it does mean that my MTB days are over and getting out of the saddle and pedalling at the same time is not great thus I am no hill climber and therefore the ability to sit and spin up hills is something that I feel I might only get with a triple suggesting the Defy might be the better option for my situation and physical ability. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks
