Hi, i have just brought a Trek 1.7 09, which i have had fun on during SOME of the British sun, i want to use throughout the winter but would like to know if it is possible to upgrade the tyres to something a little more suited to the conditions of the Winter.

I have Bontrager racelites at the moment which are pretty standard and think that i would be more comfortable on a cross tyre.

Cheers Stu

I dont know about you, but for me the most important thing in the winter is not getting punctures and a good reliable tyre allround and there is only one i can think of and thats Michelin Krylion Carbon. Excellent tyres, good grip and last for 5000+Kms.

when you say 'cross tyre' you don't mean with nobbly bits do you? - they don't offer any more grip on tarmac and may actually offer less!

the racelights you have make excellent winter tyres - they are very good (in my experience) at not picking up punctures. have a set of 28mm ones on my winter bike which are great and lasted ages.

use your racelites through the winter and then upgrade the tyres for something nice next winter.

  • I'm still using racelites and have even replaced with the same on the commuter as they're perfectly adequate tyres for many situations. For special occasions I'm fond of Pro Race 3s but for normal use they're fine.
