Try the MuVi for sheer size and price - a couple of youtube guys have posted some footage and its pretty good quality for the money, even in low light. See the helmet cam thread as a few guys there have been posting clips of them. Only downside is that it isnt water tight in anyway.

Other than that a higher budget might be needed imo

Guess there would be a way to water proof it though ?

You can sometimes do it with a syringe and some silicone sealant around the seams. Any hinged areas wont work like that though. The best solution I ever heard of was to use a party balloon and cut a hole for the lens, this has been used on a compact digicam, so I dont see any reason why it couldnt work with this - just buy a smaller balloon. :)

Oh and there are also sports packs for this cam. You'd need to buy the right one or esle you just get the cam iirc. Svengali did a review of a pack on youtube iirc.

Cheers Mate, will take a look into it further, I need something that is better than the ATC2000 (not hard really ) that shows the real picture (speed, angle etc and that I can pull number plates from if/when needed

How about the GoPro Helmet Hero?

This amusing little video shows it off quite well.

Nahh in all fairness he doesnt do anything wrong, I ride with him, if he was a nutter I wouldnt ride with him (note how I dont ride with the person who hit my wheel in the Manc-Pool ride anymore) I think its just because hes short :D

The helmet pros have improved (if you get the HD ones) buyt they're still too bulky for a helmet. They'd probably do ok on the bike itself.

I used to ride with the atc3000 on my helmet and tbh I think it distracted some drivers from the roads a little.

It has the same sensor and imaging quality as the atc3k. It is also bigger and the batteries run out quicker due to the screen. The atcs are good in a quirky way and I personally like them, but with winter approaching I'd say get a camera that works in low light.

Rule of thumb - if you want to know how well a camera records just tap its name into the search bar on Youtube :) Also look for dealers on youtube such as Dogcam Sports as they will often upload videos and favourite others.

Its difficult getting a decent view of any registration plate on a speeding car, even with high quality spec cameras.

Many bikers shout out the registration number so their headcam mic can pick it up, make sure whatever headcam you pick has a decent mic as well.

I agree with that, though then you're in the several hundred £££s territory, as even the Countour HD mic is laughable (though WAY better than the ATC range)

Oh and I will say this.. if you get involved in an incident dont shout out "I have you on camera!" or someone will try and snatch it off you. It'll end up on ebay

There's a few 'well known' cyclists with headcams on you-tube that have done exactly that, crazy, if someone had filmed me transgressing,(not that I ever do) I would not be a happy chappy that someone had just told me they had filmed it.

I know them too. I think cams are becoming quite common and there will be a risk of someone trying to snatch one soon. It has happened when people have gotten their mobi out to photo plates so I can see it happening here too.
  • Some of the cams or recorders have an external mic socket for a better mic but it does mean one more wire.

I know it is out of your stated budget, but have a look at the POV1.5 - a nice piece of kit, is waterproof and has an in-cable mic. Christmas is coming and you are knocking off the weight targets! If they did an HD version I think it would be popular.

With the 7 day cooling off period you get in the distance selling regs, you could try a few out, see whether you can resolve registration plates with them under low light, before you decide which to keep.

Yeah they look ok for the money, however I havent heard anything about low light peformance.

The POV1.5 is also a bit of a problem for some in low light. My HQ2 bullet cam switches to IR response when it gets too dark

  • A bit big for helmet mounting it seems, they have a shot of it on a motorbike helmet:
    Helmetwhite%20560%20x%20560.jpg

Couldn't find any info on battery life or how long a video would fit on an 8GB or 16GB card.

The video does look very nice and clear, though, and the device seems well thought out, and should be showerproof (waterproof to 0.5m).
