bikeregister.com - Yay or Nay?

Evening all, I found this website when I was looking for a transponder / RFID tag for our new bikes and registered, paying my £21 per bike for a DataTag and SelectaMark kit. I then went to immobilse.com to register (registration seemed secondary to getting s tag) and noticed that they sell the "immobitag" for £25 a pair. Nuts!

Does anyone else know about bikeregister.com? It occurs to me that I have just added to a potential shopping list for an entrepreneurial bike thief :?

I'd be reassured to hear if anyone else has bought a DataTag, from bikeregister or otherwise!

Cheers,
BM

Not bought one - it still depends on the police getting your bike / frame back.

  • For anyone else contemplating a DataTag kit, Wiggle sell them and you can read a review here: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/DataTag_Security_Kit/5360021883/.

Whilst I agree that the frame has to be found first, having a tag that responds to transponder scans means your is more likely to be identified amongst a bunch of others if the Police find a load of stolen bikes. My uncertainty is to do with which transponder to get rather than whether to get one :-)

If this is, as one of the review suggests, the size of a grain of rice, then I'll get an immobilise one too (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Immobilisecom_ImmobiTag_Electronic_Cycle_Protection_Kit/5360039905/) to cover the bases. £35 on relative peace of mind for a £1600 bike is not much!
  • Just in case anyone else is wondering about these I thought I'd give a summary of fitting them. In the £21 kit you get a transponder the size of a grain of rice, some hardcore epoxy glue, 2 dotted stencils that allow you to daub a UV reactive paint onto the frame and forks, one big "DataTag" sticker that doesn't stick to curved tubes very well, 2 big "this bike is tagged" red stickers and 4 small stickers with the same ID as the stencil - not bad!

Fitting is easy, although you will do yourself a favour if you have a good length of stiff plastic coated wire and something like a drinking straw to bodge the transponder into place with. I mixed up a good big blob of glue then used my improvised (and disposable!) tools to gunk it into place inside the down tube, having taken the forks etc. out of both bikes. The glue sets quickly and was fairly easy to use - do make sure the frame is prepped and stable though before you start :-) Stickers are a personal choice, but I put the big green DataTag one (nothingl ike the image on the site, by the way - silver and green - almost tasteful) just below the seat collar and the others underneath the frame. I also stencilled the frame and foks.

The website has a logbook for you to record all this against the frame number and is easy to use - hope this helps someone :-)
