which long travel 'hardcore' hardtail for £1000?

I'm thinking of selling up my orange patriot and carrera vulcan and spending about £1k on something like a mid travel full susser or more ideally, a longer travel ht (140mm) because i barely ever ride my patriot, and my carrera leaves a lot to be desired. looking for something that can do it all, commuting, xc, am, maybe a bit of light fr. Looking at maybe a gt aggressor (which is good spec but i'm not too sure about the frame) or an orange crush (good spec again and i prefer the frame. It's £100 more but if i get it from my local bike shop i can get 10% student discount).
I'm also tempted by a carrera titan just for the sheer VFM, even though it's a bit more xc oriented than i might like, or maybe a boardman full susser, but i'm kind of leaning away from full sus because of them sapping my pedaling power.... But if i was to go down that route, maybe a new gt i-drive.
Any other suggestions?
cheers

You need to have a sit down and work out what you really want, as quite a few options there! (and travel/weight differences).0

Weight doesn't bother me too much, my patriot is a pretty heavy beast, but that didn't stop me carrying it over a motorway bridge
What sort of variables do you think i should be looking at?0 -
Could get an on-one 456 or a Ragley Blue Pig.0

yeah that looks good actually, maybe a little less travel than i would like, but so far the only one i've found with u-turn, cheers. Would quite like something with air sprung forks though... i know, i'm asking a lot!0

oo what do we have here...

Loveeerrrly bike :P
sell the 55's (they're rubbish anyways) and stick some air forks on instead.0 -
yeah i saw that, that's another maybe, the brakes/drivetrain aren't very good though0

16.3kg?! I bet his bloody patriot weighs less than that!0

So far the main competitors are the gt aggressor and the orange crush, i don't really like the frame on that genesis.0 -

hmm, looks good, i like the sound of the forks. Are those gears/shifters any good? i'm not too familiar with shimano, whereas sram is nice and easy to work out :P0

SLX, Deore, and XT stuff that I use all works well, so I can't see a problm there.
The forks are pretty good - I mentioned the bike because I'm quite interested in it myselfNow that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10 -
ahhhh i see, possibly a little over my budget though. I could get a crush down to just under £1000 in my LBS ya see... (student discount)0

Marin Rocky ridge, swap the rear tyre to a Kenda straight 8 the front to a Kenda Nevegal and learn the tuck position, ie hands next to the stem when on the road and you'll hammer along like a streamlined snake.........all

This should be a good bike
Genesis Abyss 2009
It's better than the Core 40 in components, and it's build for harder
riding than the Core series, but not as strong as the NS.
Hey, Core is used by both NS and Genesis, I now notice...
Or this one:
Charge Blender Hi 2009
Only minus is that it's available in 15",
so I don't know if it will bother you the small size for XC or commuting.0 -

i'm looking at a 2010 Orange crush. i have my eye on 4 websites and i will try to get it next year when i have more money.0

Its a nice hardcore hardtail & from what you have at the moment, the Orange Crush sounds like the one to be honest, plus it looks lurvley, and if you can get a discount all the better, if I were you I'd get the Crush.
And here it is for you to mull it overOrange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

Yeah to be honest it's top of my list still. I'm about to go into nottingham to have a look round some bike shops and see what they have in stock anyway
i know one of them is on orange dealer and i think they still have an '09 crush

The new Crush seems more of a long travel XC bike this year, especially looking at the rims. The 2009 gets a much burlier wheelset rather than the cheap set it has now.0
-
yeah, i noticed that too, i prefer the brakes, crankset and wheels on last years. A local bike shop has one at £978 but it's 17", a bit small for me
i'm tempted to go down on tuesday and give it a test ride though when it's less busy.
They also had a trek fuel, which i'm thinking about0
