I personally cannot see beyond GARMIN when it comes to GPS. I use the 705 for the bike, the 405 for running and a 101 for in the hills, attached unobtrusively to the strap of my daysack for when I need a grid in low vis.
However, I reckon for your needs, the new 310XT will fit the bill. It's designed with Triathletes in mind so it'll do for running and cycling and can display grids in the British OS format so should give you a fix when you're up there (which IMO is all you need a GPS for so long as you can work the significantly less technical map and compass!).0 -
What features are you are after holmeboy?
Im in the market too so imm keen to see what gets recomended here.
My mate just got the 405cx for running so Ill get a recomendation of himThere is nothing more unequal, than the equal treatment of unequals!0 -
The 405 can be used for both running and cycling and will give cadence and speed/distance when used with the appropriate accessory. It won't however give you a grid reference.
The 705 on the other hand will give you a GR but it is of no use whatsoever for running unless you carry it in your hand.0 -
I use the 305 forerunner - but it was bought and used primarily for running.
Fine on the bike thoughCommute: Langster -Singlecross - Brompton S2-LX
Road: 95 Trek 5500 -Look 695 Aerolight eTap - Boardman TTe eTap
Offroad: Pace RC200 - Dawes Kickback 2 tandem - Tricross - Boardman CXR9.8 - Ridley x-fire0 -
If it`s mainly for cycling you could get a garmin edge and use an i-pod armband or something for walking, otherwise the forerunner if you do a lot of running.Smarter than the average bear.0

I bought the 305 and not happy with it to be honest. It down loads info only when it wants to, can take 15-20 attempts and also turns its self of mid ride I won't buy another that is for sure.0

Call Garmin.
I had the powering off problem and they replaced my 205, excellent customer service seeing as it was over the guarantee period. Got it back within a week as well.0 -
+1 for Garmin customer service. I had a minor problem with the backlight on my 705 so sent it back (head unit only). Within a week they had sent me a whole new retain box with all accessories so I now have spares of everything!
I would thoroughly recommend the 705 but it sounds like it may not be suitable for your needs cos you could only really use it for cycling. Works very well with ascent software on my mac though.
I've also got a forerunner 305 which I picked up on eBay second hand for about 70 quid which I use for running, rowing, skiing - well everything else actually. I've had no problems with it but it does take rather a long time to pick up satellite reception sometimes and it isn't too good in trees. From what I have heard the newer models have solved this issue though. If every mistake you make is a new one ... cheer up, you're making progress!0
