Hi
I have just noticed a hairline crack of about 2 inches on the downtube of my trek madone. Looks like it comes from the bottleholder boss. I can only think I overtightened a screw. Is the frame now wrecked? can it be repaired?

Depends on what model it is?

I assume it's a carbon fibre frame? If it is indeed cracked - then I would be very nervous about riding it personally. However, if it hasn't been cracked - then Trek have a lifetime warantee on their frames - so get into a dealer and see what you have to do to get it replaced. And don't mention to them that you "may have overtightened" anything. Just tell them you've just notice a crack....

FWIW most frame bottle cage bosses are fitted of a riv-nut type bush and are unaffected by over-tightening of the bottle cage screw - the crack is more likely due to a poorly finished hole in the frame prior to fitting of the boss, combined with too much force when inserting the riv-nut. Sounds like a warranty claim to me, but the last guy with a cracked Madone on here got diddly from Trek...
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
