SRAM Shimano Groupset Levels?
Hi,
Just a quicky, is the below correct.
SRAM Red is the same level as Shimano Dura Ace
SRAM Force is the same level as Shimano Ultegra
SRAM Rival is the same level as Shimano 105
I just want to get an idea of what the matching Shimano groupset is for SRAM as ive been told all sorts and I dont know what to think.
Below is what ive been told by a few people, and they were very serious!?!
SRAM Red is above all other groupsets
SRAM Force is the same level as Dura Ace
SRAM Rival is the same level as Ultegra

I would say
Rival=Ultegra
Red=Dura Ace
Force= Better than Ultegra not as good as Dura Ace.
Red is lighter than Dura Ace too but I don't know if it's any better.Saracen Tenet 3 - 2015 - Dead - Replaced with a Hack Frame

Vitus Sentier VRS - 20170 -
When they were released, Force was aimed at Dura Ace level and Rival at Ultegra/105.
They then release Red, which sits above.
Since then Shimano have release the 7900 and the electronic DA. I would say 7900 could
be a similar level to Red and both probably on a par with Record. Super Record being
slightly above both.
No idea where to rank the electronic stuff.0 -

This is essentially correct.
Some people will argue Red is better than Dura Ace, etc - but in terms of the hierarchy - what you've written is correct.0 -
I think Rival is supposed to offer similar quality to Ultegra, but costs about the same as 105.
If money was no object however, I don't know whether you would want to choose Rival or Ultegra...0 -
Force sits somewhere between Ultegra and Dura-ace.
I would say order is:
Red & Dura-ace fairly equal
Force
Ultegra
Rival
1050 -
Thanks for the quick replies
Im used to Sora at the moment, so im sure any of these will be better than what I have now......Cycling never gets any easier, you just go faster - Greg LeMond0 -
Yep, any of those is a big step up from Sora.
I used it for a few years. It's ok and I didn't mind the shifters, but then got a bike with
Ultegra and couldn't believe the difference. Sora's also very hard to adjust correctly.
About to take delivery of the new Ultegra 6700 (without chainset, which is proper ugly).0 -

Couldnt agree more, spending time every time I ride adjusting gears is a pain in the ar5e....
I often wonder with the lower groupsets if they make them rubbish on purpose.
In the case of the Shimano, do they take a 105 mech, get some cheaper materials (fair
enough), but then bash it with a hammer, so you can never quite adjust to be perfect.
As I say, the Ultegra is a big step up. So easy to setup perfect and rarely need tweaking.0 -
it is probably the difference between setting it up in the stand and actually using it under load.
I always go for a longish test ride post replacing cables and do the final tweaks in real world conditions.0 -
The 2010 Force stuff is almost as good as the 2009 Red stuff was. A few grams heavier here and there - and less ceramic parts, but otherwise very similar in look and function.
A real winner if you want Red performance on a budget.0 -

Did you ask them exactly how they determined all this? They ALL tried ALL the groups?
I don't think so. I think you're being bullsh*ted by guys who want to claim they know ALL
about ALL of this. They look at the price of something and the highest cost wins. It's got to be better 'cause it costs more. Either that or they read an advertisement that claimed
a certain group was far superior to another and they fell for it. Is a Bentley any better or worse than a Rolls? Is any small subcompact car really any better than the next one?
Does DA shift and / or perform any better / worse than Record / Red? No. Top of the line is generally top of the line. Mid range stuff is just that.0 -
Is any small subcompact car really any better than the next one?
Quite clearly, yes.0 -
Well, if no small subcompact car is better than any other, then that would mean that they are all the same. Same performance, same value for money, same longevity, same security etc. Clearly that is not the case, and some must be better than others, based on typical user criteria. I did not claim to have tried them all.0

I guess I don't buy it. I don't really see the difference in small cars. They get you from point A to point B with good gas mileage, probably in cramped quarters, not a lot of room,
and they are cheap. I don't really care if car A has 2% more rear seat legroom than car B.
As for Rolls and Bentley. They do the same thing(A to except with a lot more style, worse gas mileage, and a ton more room. I will admit to a liking for the finer things in life but comparing top line bike stuff with other top line bike stuff really has nothing to do with what's better. It's all about what people like the looks of or want to ride around and pose
with or both. Throw in a good price and that may have some effect on peoples choices.0 -

Proof maybe not but an independent review/opinion - from this very site -
Rival vs. the competition
Rival may be markedly heavier than Red, but ignoring personal preferences in shift actuation style and feel – such as two levers versus one, light versus firm action, etc – and intangibles such as aesthetics, it still holds a significant weight advantage over comparable groups from Shimano and Campagnolo.
For example, Shimano’s 105 group is a near match for Rival pricewise but the more expensive Ultegra SL is much closer in weight, although even that group is about 100g heavier. Right-hand lever throw for upshifts is also much longer – 20 degrees versus just 10 – though Shimano still edges out SRAM on the other side, even with the new Zero Loss spool, at 25 degrees versus 35.Focus Culebro Tria0 -

Well, I put it all down to how much the groupset weights I think, SRAM Rival weights less than normal Ultegra and only a couple of grams more than SL I think - don't know how things stand compared to the new Ultegra and new Rival though. Update well apparently it weights less than SL too.
If you are talking function wise I really think that is down to the user, I don't mind Shimano or SRAM to be honest - never tried Campagnolo.x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

 Proper ugly.... I just specced that groupset, 'cos I liked the chainset!
Same as DA, is it not?
Not as nice as my SRAM Force, though.
And, for what it's worth DennisN, I would say:
Rival - Ultegra
Force - DA
RED - League of it's own!
I do not have to justify the above, to you, or anyone else, it is simply my opinion!Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -
For what it's worth, I've got the older Ultegra on my winter bike, and the new DA on my best bike, and I can't honestly say that there is £600 to £700 difference between the two. So given that the new Ultegra is a sort of 'copy' of the new DA, then I wouldn't go any further than considering the new Ultegra.
I've also ridden the 2008 SRAM Rival, and have to say that in my opinion, it was as good as my old Ultegra, and better than 105.
My LBS says that the 2009 Force was not reckoned to be such a big difference to the 2009 Rival, whereas the 2010 Force is said to be a big improvement, and sits between the new Ultegra and the new DA.PeteM0
