Can someone give me some information on this classification. I'm not quite sure how someone who was lanterne rouge for a while in the Tour is able to lead it...unless it only includes certain lower level races?

Thanks. That is a good idea I think as with so many pro riders, there are hundreds that wont get a look in.

Just because someone is coming last in the Tour, doesn't mean they're a sh!t cyclist and incapable of winning anything? Hutarovich eventually came last, yet he's very highly rated, just not a GC rider in major tours, ditto Van Hummel.

Europe Tour is 'lower' races, in that they're ranked lowered than Lombardy or Paris Tours for example, but there are still plenty of big, famous races in there. K-B-K, Haut Var, Eroica, Veneto just a tiny pick of the one dayers, Crit Internationa, Castilla y Leon, Trentino are just a few of the stage races.

Basically it's everything outside of the ProTour/World Calendar/whatever it's called now. Not quite sure on how the points work, but if you win it, it's safe to say you've had a very good season and probably beaten some big names along the way.

Past winners are Eeckhout, Fischer, Gasporotto and Bertolini, so it rewards those riders (typically ProConti) who ride a lot of event throughout the season.

I wouldn't call this 'lower level races', it's just all the UCI races that are not ProTour or 'Monument' .

Omloop Het Volk, Brabantse Pijl, Criterium International, Tour of Burgos, Paris-Brussels, Paris-Tours, Giro dell'Emilia, not exactly 'lower level races'!!!

Van Hummel is a good sprinter, don't let yourself be fooled by all the cult status PR around the lanterne rouge

Giovanni Visconti took top honours in the end.

    Very well deserved.
