I priced up the full Assos winter kit last night, the one they publish on their website. Bibs, whicking top, jacket, hat, glove system, socks....came to £530. I have been using the same old kit since the mid 90s. Its old and it needs replacing. If I buy all this Assos gear will I feel like the dogs bollocks or will I wish I hadnt bothered? Also, it says its only recommended for use between 0 and 8 degrees...now that is a pretty limited window......am I really going to boil if its 10degrees or freeze if its minus 1?

Everyone says its mint, but is it £530 mint?

I bought bibs, whicking top, jacket, hat, gloves, socks, overshoes from Aldi for £45. Don't know about sub-zero but I was a bit hot at 3° this morning. Without the hat or overshoes.

Some people say it's shite, but is it 1/12th of the price shite?

Ouch ..as much as I'd like to say I had Assos kit (the chamois cream I do buy) personally I think it's too expensive for what it is. Retail is a rip-off.

I have bibshorts (2), biblongs, gillet and jacket... Lovely, and yes, I feel the mutts nuts!
I use a variety of other manufacturers for the rest of my kit, namely: Craft, Pearl Izumi, Sidi, DHB, Santini, blah... blah... blah...

I've always thought if I can afford something and I like it then I'd buy it afterall its my money and me thats using what I'm buying. Yeah its great for your ego when you get rassurrance from peers but the bottom line is there is more chance they would have a problem with what you bought due to their own limitations etc not yours. BTW I rarely get a chance to spend a lot of money on something now but did when I had a much better paying job a few years back (I earn less than half what I used to but I'm still happy with my lot)

Sanitni does the job for me. I can't see that the Assos can be twice as good for twice the money.

I crashed recently and ripped my shorts and jersey a bit as I slid along the tarmac. At £35 each it was irritating but not the end of the world.

If it was Assos kit I would have been seriously p*ssed off and looking at hundreds of pounds to replace (not to mention that my bike cost less than the kit you're talking about).

Incidentally, I don't think Assos kit would have prevented me coming off!

    Lol

I get decent shorts (Endura) and shoes (SPD) but Aldi/Lidl for everything else.

If it had been Assos, you could have sent them your kit and they would have repaired it (or at least attempted to)

I really like their bibshorts and biblongs. Not too fussed with their tops. The intermediate Evo is ok, but overpriced, even for Assos, and I get too warm in the jacket on all but the very coldest days.

I've now got full Assos outfit(s) and is the best buy I've made. Was previously using low to mid price stuff (dhb mainly) and the difference is astounding. Being absolutely comfortable on the bike over 60 - 100 miles is worth the price and encourages you to keep coming back for more.

Bibshorts, tights, jackets are the best. Wouldn't bother with their base layers, jerseys, socks etc though.

When you get to high(er) end stuff, you never get twice as good for twice the money. Is a £3,000 twice as good as a £1,500 bike? £1,000 wheels twice as good as £500 wheels etc. It begins to be incremental improvements for quite a lot more money.

I also started off thinking "rediculous price, can't be worth it! until I eventually bought a set of tights for winter (£175 if I recall) and from then on was sold!

if you do come off your bike, the Assos kit will be equally as ruined as any other brand!!! not wishing that on anyone - but i felt a bit releived that when i did come off at 30mph it was "only" Altura shorts and jersey that ended up with large holes in them.

I have a mixture, but honestly can't fault some of the lidl/aldi stuff. I am not sure I would be spending £500 in one go, you can get a decent winter hack for that money!

I usually wear Assos shorts but I went out in my old Alexa bibs today(heard of them?) as it was a mere 40 mile trip round the block.
For the last 10 miles I felt a mixture of emotions -sort of wanting to cry and vomit at the same time as i was so uncomfortable. My a*se knows the difference and I think, considering the hours it spends pressed against a six inch square bit of leather, it deserves some decent money spending on shorts.
Tops- maybe not so vitally important.. can't really comment as I am not a big top-half spender.
