Pedal upgrade from SPD-Rs

My first set of clipless pedals came off Ebay - Shimano Ultegra SPD-Rs. Contrary to some opinion I found clipping in and out ok, but they are now looking a bit scratched and worse for wear.

Probably thinking of upgrading, but not sure at all what to go for. I'm using DHB R1 shoes which I don't intend to change at this stage and they are compatable with several cleats. No particular desire for any brand in particular and my riding tends to be 40-50 milers at weekends and relatively traffic free. Having had a couple of clippage related topples I still think ease of use needs to be the priority. Any ideas? Budget around £50 ish.
