yup... bit of a pain. Been waiting for 3 weeks so far, should hopefully be fixed next week.
Basically my oil pump failed > oil pressure rose > tappets over adjusted > valve clearence increased causing the valve heads to hit the postion and snap off!
Still... my engine will be nice and fresh afterwards, tis getting fully repaired and refreshed with a few tweeks here and there.... might as well while i'm at it!0 -
I had a white XR3i way back in the mists of time (go on, get the piss-taking over and done with) that snapped its timing belt whilst at the rev limiter in second gear.
There wasn't a single part of the engine, including the exhaust manifold or rocker cover that could be used again. Conrods through the block, valves embedded in the pistons, crank bent, you name it. I remember taking the sump plug out and it was just a stream of broken metal.0 -

From a mechanics point of view THATS FOOKED!0 -
So what does it need?
New valves, oil pump and a head gasket?0 -
on the rear of the v it needs new pistons + valves, like I said, the front is perfectly fine..
then oil pump, head gasket (head is already off to be skimmed at a rally/motorsport specialists).
Luckily the camshaft if fine, and there have been no damage to the block at all.
Basically herd it go and switched the engine off immediately, pretty much saving it. I actually thought that the timing belt had skipped a cog, so I was preparing for a new engine tbh.0 -
Get your lottery numbers on this week, it looks like your luck is in.0

I guess so... it'd probably work out cheaper to stick a new block in there, but seeing as though there is no unrepairable damage its best to get it fixed so that I actually know the history of the engine.0

Nah, they'll be fine as they are. They'll just create a bit more swirl in the mixture.
People pay good money to have profiled pstons like that."I ride to eat"0 -
The worst bit will be having to drive it like a girl (i.e. under 3,000 rpm), for 1,000 miles while you run it in
The oil pump died on my old MK2 Golf Gti 16v - oil pressure went with it and the engine seized, blowing out the big end bearings and bending a couple of con-rods
Basically needed a new bottom end.0
