whilst buying a spare wheelset i decided to get a spare cassette, i came across a cheap XTR cassette whilst looking around, will this be compatible with my current set up, at the moment i have SHIMANO HG61 9S 11X34 cassette and SHIMANO XT FCM770 crank , the chain is a shimano cn hg58 , will it be ok, if not is the XT cassette any good ?

It should be fine, but you should get a new chain too.

Check the gear ratios are what you want though.

any 9spd cassette will work with any 9spd set up

XTR is top of the line Shimano, XT is next down the scale.

If the new cassette is 11-32 and the old one 11-34 the chain will be a little slacker in some ratios

    yes.
    yes.

as long as they are the correct speed for your set up.

yes, it should cause no issues, but as Sonic says you might need a new chain, depends on how worn the old chain is.

A worn chain will wear new components out quicker.

A chain is a chain*. so long as it's the same speed as the rest of the drivetrain it's good to go.

    *generally speaking (awaits flaming)

I agree with that, I use the cheapest SRAM I can find.
